  • The characteristics of vacuum sintered HSS with MoS2 addition

    The behaviour of compacts made from water atomized M3/2 and M35 type HSS powders with MoS2 addition was analysed during vacuum sintering. The influence of MoS2 on the densification during vacuum ... sintering of selected powder mixtures is presented. It was established that the added MoS2 acts as the indirect sinterability enhancer. The densification of HSS-MoS2 powder mixtures proceed by the combination of reactive and supersolidus liquid-phase sintering process. The added MoS2 reacts with steel matrix. The complex dispersion of spherical sulfides (Cr,V,Fe)S is formed, whilst Mo enriches the steel matrix and forms the complex eutectic M6C carbides with other alloying elements. The reaction which is also noticed during vacuum sintering is the reduction of surface oxides of water atomized steel powder particles by solid carbon from solid solution.
