  • Systematic learning from proficiency testing schemes in support of wastewater monitoring in Slovenia
    Cotman, Magda ; Pintar, Albin
The European Union's Water Framework Directive forces decision makers to take the right decision about management and restoration of water resources in order to protect public health and environment. ... Therefore, there is a need to prove the quality of chemical analysis and demonstrate the reliability of measurements. The implementation of metrological principles in field laboratories is one way to improve quality of the results. Slovenian legislation regarding waste water monitoring requires laboratories to be accredited. As one of the requirements of this international standard is participation in inter-laboratory comparisons. Laboratory for Environmental Sciences and Engineering at the National Institute of Chemistry (NIC) has started by organization already several years ago. In the inter-laboratory comparison named ILC-Waste Water, nowadays about fifty laboratories participate in each round, mainly from Slovenia and neighbouring countries. Every year inter-laboratory comparison ends with a workshop, where the results are presented and discussed, so that the participants could be educated with modern metrological principles, among other with the procedures for calculating and reporting uncertainty. The article aims to address the analytical precision of results of acute toxicitytesting with Daphnia magna in different laboratories using the same test procedure, and to determine if statistically significant differences exist between results of participating laboratories.
