  • Dialectical systems theory can reconceptualise research management in chemical engineering
Klinar, Dušan, 1957- ; Mulej, Matjaž ; Senčar, Peter
On examining problems of action and observation some interesting new views become evident. We started to reconceptualise research management in chemical engineering and technology -CE&T- with the ... help of dialectical systems theory - DST. The idea of a "lean research team" offers a good solution for increasing R&D efficiency and effectiveness. A lean research team should consist of broader experts, rather than of the traditional experts, just because of the breadth of their competence, responsibility and commitment. This combination of organisation and people also offers a possibility to apply a research portfolio. A consequence of such an approach is contractual research as a solution for an experiments and measurements -EX&M- phase of R&D. This is a global tendency concerning the improvement of the R&D process in developed economies. With the help of DST a new concept is formed to solve the problem of realising EX&M. We move the weight from the "hard" part of the process to a "soft" one, i.e. human processing. Thus, a fuzzy system results, which can be managed by a re-conceptualised research management -RM- based on the application of DST. The action orientation of RM (aimed at transformin invention into potential innovation that promises to become innovation) means that all activities, including EX&M, must support this intention. International publications and networking are an important part of this process, too.
