  • An integrative approach towards the assessment of marine ecosystem health (Northern Adriatic) [oral presentation]

    The Marine Strategy Framework Directive establishes a framework for the achievement of Good Environmental Status (GEnS) in the EU marine environment using 11 qualitative descriptors, which till now ... proved to be a quite difficult and challenging task. We present here an integrative approach which takes into account state-based (Biodiversity, Food webs, and Seafloor integrity) and pressure-based descriptors that are used to assess ecosystem health in relation to climate changes and eutrophication in a part of the Adriatic Marine Sub-Region. Instead of describing each descriptor separately, we grouped existing biological (plankton and benthic) indicators into three ecological attributes - composition, structure and functioning. Most of the indicators were assigned to composition and structure and only one (primary production) to functioning. Then we assigned a score to every indicator using existing data and/or expert judgement and weighted the contribution of each indicator to achieve an overall assessment of EnS. Through this integrative approach we sought to overcome the unbalanced assessment which can arise from using the descriptive approach alone. http://mbss.org
