  • Response of wood in beech to mechanical wounding
Oven, Primož ; Merela, Maks ; Vek, Viljem
Compartmentalization boundary layers surrounding different types of mechanical wounds were investigated in beech wood (Fagus sylvatica L.). Light and fluorescence microscopy was employed for ... anatomical research and UV/VIS spectrophotometry for determination of total phenol content. Boundary layers separating sound and compromised wood anatomically corresponded to the reaction zone. Vessels were intensively occluded with deposits of gums and suberised tylosis, insoluble deposits filled lumina of ray and axial parenchyma, fiber tracheids and all pit apertures in reaction zones. Higher content of the total phenols was present in the reaction zones and wound-wood, while in the sapwood and discolored wood the content of total phenolic compounds was lower. Active defensive and passive protective function of reaction zones in living trees is discussed.
