  • Septic tanks as small municipal sewage treatment plants
    Krzyk, Mario ; Drev, Darko
The function of a septic tank is primarily to retain wastewater and purify it in an anaerobic process. Septic tanks are differentiated by flow rate and number of compartments. The simple septic tank ... has no compartment, while septic tanks with two or three compartments are common. Legislation in most European countries requires proper treatment of household wastewater at wastewater treatment plants and does not allow the use of existing septic tanks. In most cases, this means that a sewage system must be constructed through which sewage is transported to a treatment plant, or small treatment plants of the appropriate type must be installed. Transporting the wastewater by tanker trucks to the treatment plants is in most cases the most expensive and economically unacceptable solution. A suitable multi-compartment septic tank can also be a small municipal wastewater treatment plant or a part of a municipal wastewater treatment plant. As a stand-alone municipal treatment plant, it can be used in holiday and residential buildings if it is possible to provide sufficient retention time for sufficiently efficient anaerobic processing of contaminants. The septic tank can also be used as part of a wastewater treatment system, with the final treatment provided by a suitable infiltration trench, constructed wetland, etc. Such a solution is much cheaper for individual residential or weekend houses, with the cost of its construction being in the order of the cost of building 10–20 m of sewage pipes.
