  • Acoustic detection of melt expulsion during resistance spot welding
    Diaci, Janez ...
Melt expulsion out of the region of spot-weld is generally an undesirable effect, which occurs when energy input to the nugget is intense. Expulsion is not only a disturbance in working environment ... which could have potentially harmful consequences for the nearby people, but it also degrades weld quality in terms of visual appearance, corrosion resistance and tensile strength. Expulsion occurrence cannot be prevented by careful technology design, nor it can be reliably predicted in spite of recent in welding-process monitoring and control. In this contribution we examine an acoustic method for expulsion detection. We use microphone to detect audible sound emitted during the welding process and piezoelectric sensor to detect acoustic emission from the weld piece. Acuired signals were analysed with the objective to develop a reliable algorithm for determination of expulsion initiation.
