  • Monitoring internal oxidation in pure metals
    Rudolf, Rebeka ...
In this paper we present two special kinds of internal oxidation phenomena that can take place in pure metals containing a high concentration of defects, particularly thermodynamically stabilized ... vacancy clusters. These processes are internal oxidation IO and internal carbonisation IC. Both processes start with the dissolution of oxidant O or C into the pure metal at free surfaces, and continue with the diffusion of oxidant atoms into the metal matrix volume, where they are trapped at numerous defects in the crystal lattice. The incresing oxidant activity at these places causes local oxidation of the matrix and consequently, precipitation of fine oxide or graphite particles. The results of experimental studies and the monitoring of both processes in rapidly solidified pure copper are similar, because the mechanisms and kinetics of these processes are closely related. The formation of a microstructure consists of continuos 3D copper matrix, and homogeneous finely-dispersed submicro Cu2O or C particles. These particles were precipitated simultaneously throughout the entire volume of the Cu-matrix and no precipitation front appeared in the microstructure during the experiments.
