  • The microstructure analysis of AlSi7-SiC composites made by thixocasting process
    Rudolf, Rebeka ; Križman, Alojz
Thixocasting is a novel process where the liquid and the solid phase of an alloy are vigorously stirred. The normal growing of dendrites is hindered and [alpha] primary globular crystals evolve. ... Materials produced in this way are well suited for metal matrix composites. By this proceedure a better homogeneity and wettability of reinforced elements are achieved. The paper deals with the microstructure analysis of composites AlSi7+SiC made by thixocasting. The results show that the homogeneous distribution of SiC in matrix depends on volume fraction of SiC, particle size and morphology of SiC, isothermal stirring time and cooling velocity from semi solid to room temperature. The degree of spheroidation of [alpha] Al primary grains is strongly influnced by the presence of SiC elements.
