  • Thermal and mechanical properties of bare conductors for overhead lines under short-circuit conditions
    Jakl, Franc ; Jakl, Andrej
The paper presents results of a research in thermal and mechanical properties of stranded conductors and ground wires under the unsteady-state conditions during short-currents. It is particularly ... focused on homogenuous all aluminium and combined (bimetallic) conductors made of aluminium and aluminium-alloys. The aim of the research was to estimate the effect that elevated temperatures generally have on the loss of the tensile strength of conductors which indirectly results into increased sags and decreased safety heights or ground clearances of the line. The relevant experiments made on some types of conductors and ground wires under short-circuit conditions confirmed that from the mechanical point of view combined (bimetallic) conductors are more convenient than the homogeneous (monometallic) ones of the same cross-section. As far as thermal and mechanical stressings are concerned, the authors recommend to use ground wires of a larger cross-section with several layers of aluminium-alloy strands as they excel themselves with much better mechanical properties and smaller sags at the occurrence of elevated temperatures under unsteady-state operation.
