In the nineties the world economy has experienced the process of globalisation. Vigorous changes in economies, the advancement of science, technological convergence, and fierce competition together ... with the development of certain industrial branches - all this challenges management in manufacturing companies. Manufacturing strategy is a part of wider concept of strategic management. The content of manufacturing strategy is changing according to the dynamic development of the business environment. Emerging trends in strategic management literature emphasize the resource-based competition. A resource-based approach to strategic management focuses on unique difficult-to-imitate capabilities of the firm as sources of competitiveadvantage. Resource-based manufacturing strategy defines the guidelines for the development of resources, capabilities and competence whicha manufacturing system has to develop in order to make an active contribution to the achievement of competitive advantage. In this paper we would like to present a project-based framework, which will help manufacturing executives to identify and develop manufacturing capabilities. The continuous nature of the process can be managed with stochastic definition of the project. In such a project deliverables are gradually defined and achieved (phasal approach). Sucess of a manufacturing capabilities development programme is measured by learning and financial performance criteria.
