  • Fair business with distrusted merchants over the internet by using digital money
    Brumen, Boštjan ...
The business conducted over the Internet is very similar to a "normal" one, except in one significant difference: merchant and customer do not see and usually not even know each other. In this case ... the merchant will not give away the goods (or services) on trust. On the other hand, the customer may not want to pay in advance without an assurance that the merchant will eventually provide the goods or services. Still, if the offer by the merchant is interesting enough, the customer may risk and conduct business with the merchant. The risk can be reduced to a minimum by using several precautionary measures supported by our framework. Emphasis in the paper will be given to the infrastructure necessary to prevent frauds by fake or distrusted merchants. The infrastructure, first of all, provides means to identify and check a legal status of a merchant. Next, a customer is able to obtain a proof that the payment has been done. And last, in a case disputes, an arbiter should be able to resolve the dispute based on the data available. In our project, we designed several protocols which support the requirements for minimizing the risk.
