  • Downsizing: conversations between the USA and Slovenia
Brister, Jozell ; Lynn, Monty L. ; Mulej, Matjaž
Downsizing-or the planned elimination of jobs-appears to be slowing in the United States, but not in some Central and East European (CEE) sectors. In the Alpine nation of Slovenia, for example, ... downsizing reached a peak as firms prepared for privatization in the early 1990s. But waves of downsizings are projected to continue while Slovenian firms compete with lean Western firms in increasingly open markets. As the downsizing dust settles in the United States (US), the picture has become increasingly clear of downsizing's short- and some longer-term effects...many of which are negative. This paper thus addresses two issues: 1) At its heart, we use the latest research findings to describe downsizing in the US experience, highlighting lessons learned which may be transferrable to Slovenia, and; 2) at its fingertips, we sketch an initial and cursory image of some downsizing dynamics in Slovenian and other CEE economies and industries.
