  • The rhetorical rules of educational discourse

    This paper presents the rhetorical perspective on education and highlights some rhetorical rules that seem most related to it. It presupposes that educational process is essentially a specific form ... of language use, a social activity, tightly bound to its specific social context, determined by its specific purpose and goal, in short educational discourse. Quintilian's The Institutio Oratoria was selected for two main reasons. On the one hand, Quintilian is highly technical and discusses rhetorical strategies with unfailing precision. On the other hand, he is priceless as regards relating rhetoric to education. On the basis of this text, the paper examines how a speech (or a text) should be constructed to be most suitable and effective in the classroom.
