    Background. Important part in every day clinical psychiatric work is prophylactic and maintenance neuroleptic therapy of schizophrenia. The authorsdescribe contemporary guidelines for prophylactic ... and maintenance therapy. The selection of drug, its form and dose is discussed with special attention. The duration, expected effectiveness and discontinuation of the treatment is described. Conclusion. Despite the effectiveness many patients with schizophrenia do not benefit from neuroleptic therapy due to in appropriate treatment procedure. Stable and maintained remission of the symptoms is essential for meeting other patients' needs including rehabilitation.
