  • Izločanje sline med obsevanjem in po njem = Salivary flow rate during and after radiotherapy
    Rode, Mirela ...
The aim of the present study was to explore and evaluate the effects of parasympathomimetic pilocarpine and anticholinergic biperiden on the secretionand composition of saliva in patients with ... malignant tumours of the head and neck during radiotherapy. A study was carried out on a series of 69 patients who were randomised into three groups. Group A consisted of patients receiving pilocarpine, Group B of those receiving biperiden during radiotherapy and pilocarpine for six weeks after its completion, and Group C patients not receiving any xerostomy prevention therapy during or after radiotherapy. The quantity of secreted saliva was measured before the beginning of therapy, after a dose of 30 Gy of radiation, on completion of irradiation, and 3, 6 and 12 months after completion of radiotherapy. Six months after the completion of radiotherapy, the differences in the quantity of secreted saliva between groups C and B as well as between groups A and B were found to be statistically significant (P = 0.002 and 0.05 respectively). It seems that the inhibition of saliva production during radiotherapy and stimulation after the completion of radiotherapy may contribute to the preservation of salivary gland function after therapy.
