Kopčavar Guček, Nena ; Beović, Bojana
Background. The aim of the study was to evaluate the efficacy of vaccination in our environment. Patients and methods. A group of 60 patients was randomly chosen from among the ones vaccinated in ... outpatient clinic Zdravje in the fallof 1996. The control group was selected from the non-vaccinated patients of the same clinic. The groups were matched for gender, age, profession and chronical ilnesses. A questionnaire was mailed to all participants inquiring about the respiratory tract infections in the period of observation, i.e. fromJanuary 1, 1997 to April 31, 1997. Some of the answers were doublechecked in the medical records of the participants. Chi square test was used to analyse the answers and p + 0.05 was set as the limit. Results. 51 (85%) of the vaccinated and 38 (63%) of the control group responded. The average numberof consultations with the physician concerning respiratory tract infections in the vaccinated group was significantly lower than the same parameter in the control group (0.33 consulattions per person in the vaccinated group versus 0.71 consultations per person in the non-vaccinated). 62% of the ones whose family members also received vaccine, reported no upper respiratory tract infections while only 13.6% of the "lone vaccinated" in the family environment remained well. The side effects were described by 4 (7.84%)vaccinated participants, while 9 (23.68%) nonvaccinated declared that the fear of side effects prevented them from the vaccination. Although both groups agreed that the price of the vaccine was reasonable (88.24% of the vaccinated and 60.23% of the control), only 26% of the control group declared the intention to vaccinate in the coming season. Conclusions. The results of the study confirm good efficacy of the vaccination against influenza on the frequency of respiratory tract infections, especially in families where more members are vaccinated.
