  • Improvements to the heat transfer of an active magnetic regenerator : doktorsko delo

    This thesis presents improvements to the heat transfer of an active magnetic regenerator. As such, it takes into account two important aspects of the active magnetic regenerator%s operation, i.e., ... the temperature span and the operating frequency of the device. With respect to the improvements in the temperature span, an existing numerical model for the single-grade active magnetic regenerator was upgraded to the graded one. Furthermore, the measured magnetocaloric properties of the La-Fe-Co-Si magnetocaloric materials were processed to the point where they were suitable for implementation in the upgraded numerical model of the graded regenerators. The upgraded model was then utilized for extensive analyses of the graded regenerators% performance in terms of the cooling power and the coefficient of performance for different temperature spans. Moreover, three different La-Fe-Co-Si graded regenerators were experimentally tested for their performance. The experimental results were then used to validate the upgraded numerical model of the graded regenerator. With regard to the improvements in the operating frequency, a new, improved active magnetic regenerator principle with implemented thermoelectric thermal switches was studied. For these purposes, a new numerical model was developed, which can simulate the heat-transfer/transport dynamics of such a device. The numerical model was utilized to simulate the performance of the new magnetocaloric device with thermal switches. The simulation results gave one of the first insights into the operation of such a device. Furthermore, the new principle of the thermoelectric thermal switches was also experimentally investigated in such a way as to be suitable for applications in magnetic refrigeration.
