  • Phraseology galore : words and their combinations
    Gabrovšek, Dušan
The article focuses on phraseology in general and with special reference to Slovenian-English language pair. It highlights set combinations with a figurative meaning (idioms), and frequently ... co-occurring word combinations with a literal meaning (collocations)that linguists treat from either a monolingual (statistical-frequential) or a bilingual (contrastive) perspective. The two perspective can be combined. Phraseology comprises also wider pattering of varying lenght, which blurs the time-honored distinction between grammar and lexis. Trditionaly, idioms have received far more attention than collocations, because they are semantically striking, even though in real languagetexts are a lot less common and often stylistically non-neutral. Collocations are mostly needed in encoding tasks, whereas idioms are particulery relevant in decoding. Interlingual problems of lexical combinability are diverse and complex, because the phenomenon is probabilisticand frequently language specific; grammatical collocability is more straightforward, being as it is more deterministic. A contrastive "difficulty filter" may help us decide on a systematic basis which combinations to take into account and which ones to ignore. There are various other criteria to help us reduce the number of collocations to be dealt with. A bilingual collocations dictionary must be attuned to a specific lookup process and typical kind of use as well as to the lexical needs and skills of a well-defined target group of users. Relevant findings can also be applied to the treatment of collocations in general bilingual dictionaries for encoding.
