  • "Spikes" - šeststopenjski protokol za sporočanje slabe novice = "Spikes" - a six-step protocol for delivering bad news

    Delivering bad news is one of the most difficult challenges for pliysicians and other members of a health care professionals' team. Patient's future relationship with doctor and patient's ... psychophysical reaction about illness depend on how the news is delivered to the patient. Around the world skills ofdelivering bad news are taught mainly according to the Canadian model SPIKES, as a flexible step by step protocol which consists of following steps:Setting, Perception of the patient, Invitation, Knowledge, Emotions, Strategy and Summary. Suggested protocol is especially valid for skills required for the step of emotional support to the patient which is supposed tobe the most difficult part of delivering bad news to the patient. There is an evident need to evaluate the application of protocol in Slovenia, to adapt it to our specific needs and to include it into our medical curriculum.
