It has been known for some time that differences exist between women and men regarding cardiovascular disease. With retrospective analysis of hospitalized patients with two major cardiovascular ... diseases, heart failure and acute myocardial infarction, the authors wanted to establish the type of differencesbetween the sexes and their significance. They separately analyzed data of 187 patients (95 men and 92 women) with heart failure and 174 patients(121 men and 53 women) with acute myocardial infarction. Women with heart failure were older than man and had significantly higher rates of hypertensive heart disease (p = 0,008) and atrial fibrillation (p = 0,067). Men had higher rates of ischemic heart disease (p = 0,002) and impaired left ventricular systolic function (p = 0,003). Women were more likely to receive digoxin therapy (p = 0,01). Women who had a myocardial infarction were older, more often had arterial hypertension (p = 0,016) and were less frequently smokers (p = 0,001). A higher percentage of women than men had infarction without ST elevation and heart failure (p = 0,08). Differences between sexes regarding cardiovascular disease certainly exist. In general, women with heartdisease were older and acquired myocardial infarction less frequently than man. Several differences in the evaluation and treatment between sexes inour analysis were insignificant, which could be the result of the small studied sample size.
