    Ultrasound examination in the second trimester is performed between the 20th and 22nd week in order to establish the gestational age by measurements of thehead, abdomen and femur, and to assess fetal ... growth using appropriate growth curves. Additionally, its aim is to detect major congenital anomalies and also minor fetal anomalies that increase the risk of chromosomal anomalies. The placenta and umbilical cord are examined, and the amniotic fluid volume is assessed. Optionally, cervical length is measured in order to determine the risk of preterm defivery, and a Doppler measurement of the uterine artery blood flow is performed to establish the risk of hypertensive diseases in pregnancy and of intrauterine growth restriction. The purpose and possibilities as well as limitations of ultrasound examination should be explained to pregnant women. In addition, the results of the examination should be explained in an appropriate and clear manner.
