  • Učinek poliranja v zobni ordinaciji na površinsko hrapavost akrilata = Effects of chairside polishing on the surface roughness of acrylic resin
    Kuhar, Milan ; Funduk, Nenad
Background: Rough surfaces of denture bases promote adhesion of microorganismsand plaque formation. It is therefore important to know how different polishing systems affect surface roughness of ... denture base acrylic resins. The objective of this study was to compare the effects of four chairside polishing kits and two conventional laboratory techniques used for polishing acrylic denture base resins. Material and methods: Using contact profilometric measurement and SEM, the surface texture of 27 specimens (= 54 test surfaces) of heatpolymerizing resin was studied after cutting with a tungsten carbide bur, and after chairside and conventional polishing. Mean average surface roughness (Ra) values for each specimen group were analyzed using ANOVA and the Scheffe post-hoc test. Results: The highest mean average surface roughness was measured for surfaces finished with a tungsten carbide bur. The lowest surface roughness values were determined for acrylic resin specimens polished with a lathe and polishing paste. The Ra values of resin specimens after polishing with chairside silicone polishing kits ranged from 0.13 um to 0.22 um. Mean average Ra values for specimens polished with a polishing cream alone were significantly higher than those obtained with otherpolishing systems tested, which was confirmed by SEM images of acrylic resin surfaces. Conclusions: Conventional laboratory polishing produces the smoothest surface of denture base acrylic resin. Chairside polishing with silicone polishing systems is clinically effective and is the method of choicewhen conventional polishing is not available or when inaccessible areas of the denture base require polishing.
