  • Štirinajst let delovanja Centra za preprečevanje in zdravljenje odvisnosti od prepovedanih drog Koper (junij 1991 - junij 2005)

    Fifteen years ago, the region of Koper, particularly the coastal region oft hree municipalities, used to be among the most affected regions in Slovenia interms of the wide abuse of opiates. The ... number of persons who were addicted to opiates kept growing steadily and these were mostly young people. The then doctrine of care and treatment of such drug addicts made it possible to refer them to psychiatric hospitals for detoxification. Due to the lack of alternative programmes, such treatment was quite unsuccessful, so drug addictsrejected it as a rule. Very alarming data on widely spread HIV and AIDSinfections among the population of injecting drug users kept coming from the neighbouring Italy, and other countries from Central and Eastern Europe toSlovenia, and young Italians, who travelled to Slovenia for drugs were injecting them in Slovenia together with our young people. It is therefore no coincidence that the first Centre for the Prevention and Treatment of Addiction to Illicit Drugs in Slovenia was established in this region. The article briefly presents such a centre in Koper.
