  • Cardiac injuries due to electric current and lightning : a report on the management of patients in the Emergency Medical Department in Ljubljana during a three-year period from 2003-2006 = Prikaz obravnave bolnikov poškodovanih z električnim tokom ali udarom strele na Internistični prvi pomoči Kliničnega centra Ljubljana v obdobju 2003-2006

Significant numbers of admissions to the Ljubljana emergency department were found to relate to low-voltage electrical injury. The following retrospective analysis involved 65 consecutive patients ... with electrical injury and 7 patients with lightning injury admitted to the Emergency Medical Department inLjubljana between June 1, 2003 and June 30, 2006. There was one sudden cardiac death on the scene due to ventricular fibrillation following high-voltage current exposure at the patient's workplace. In 5 patients (7%), cardiac arrhythmias were found upon initial ECG. All of the arrhythmias resolved spontaneously and required no therapy. Nine patients (14%) experienced episodes of unconsciousness after electrical injury. Six of these were exposed to low-voltage domestic current, while for 3 patients the voltagewas not known. Among those exposed to lightning strike, one patient (14%) lost consciousness on the scene. According to the suggested criteria, cardiac monitoring would be recommended for 36 patients from our series. The rest of our 49 patients, who were monitored and were asymptomatic with no arrhythmias or ECG abnormalities and no history of heart disease or loss of consciousness, could be safely discharged.
