  • Hipodontija stalnih zob v zgornji in spodnji čeljusti pri otrocih z orofacialno shizo = Hypodontia of the permanent dentition in the upper and lower jaws of children with orofacial clefts
    Fortuna, Gašper ; Koželj, Vesna
Background: According to literature data, absence of one or more teeth is morecommon in children with orofacial clefts than in children without clefts. The aim of our study was to evaluate the ... prevalence of hypodontia among Slovene children and to assess the influence of cleft surgery on absence of teeth. Methods: We reviewed the records of 411 children with orofacial clefts and 521 children without clefts born between 1 January 1984 and 31 December 1998. Hypodontia was defined as absence of one or more teeth in the oral cavity and on x-ray films. Results: Hypodontia involving one or more teeth wasestablished in 41% of children with clefts, who had a total of 260 missing teeth. It was present in 56% of children with cleft lip, alveolus and palate, 34% of children with cieft lip and alveolus, 29% of children with cleft palate, and 15% of children with cleft lip. The most frequently missing teeth were upper lateral incisors, followed by lower second premolars and upper second premolars. Absence of upper lateral incisors and second premolars was more frequent on the left side, where clefts are generally more common. In thecontrol group, hypodontia was found in 12% of children, and the most frequently missing teeth were lower second premolars, followed by upper secondpremolars and upper lateral incisors. Conclusions: Hypodontia is more frequent in children with orofacial clefts than in children without clefts. Its prevalence increases with the size of the defect. Cleft operations may result in missing teeth if the procedure extends into the tooth germ region.
