Background: It is important that ophthalmic surgeons are proactive in ensuringthe best possible outcomes of surgical procedures by diagnosing and preoperatively treating ocular surface disease (OSD) ... and ocular surface infection disease (OSID). This is especially true in patients undergoing cataract and refractive surgery. Methods: This was a prospective study done atthe dr. Pfeifer Eye Surgery Centre . We looked at 98 consecutive patients for OSD and 200 consecutive patients for OSID who were proposed to have a cataract surgery by local ophthalmologists. We differentiated the incidence ofeach diseases considering gender and age. Results: 5 men younger than 70 years (35.7 % men younger than 70 years) and 5 females younger than 70 years (38.4 % of female younger than 70 years) had positive tests for dry eye. 17 men older than 70 years (60.7 % of men older than 70 years) and 21 female older than 70 years (48.9 % of female older than 70 years) had positive tests for dry eye. Percentage of patients with blepharitis were in average 45 % (90 patients), in men 51 % (46 patients) and in women 39 % in average (43 patients). Conclusions: Because of high percentage of OSD and OSID in population that undergoescataract surgery, it is important to treat these patients before surgery. Preoperative screening of the ocular surface and casespecific treatment plan are essential to support the ocular surface before, during and after cataract surgery.
