  • The demand of language : the justice of the différend

    Increasingly education is subjected to managerialist forces and the demands of performativity. These tend to speak a language (for example, of aim and outcomes) which teachers and students at all ... levels find alienating. The language does not speak to their experience of school and university. What is more it may claim to be the only language in which education can be spoken about. This is a kind of injustice: the injustice, to use Jean-Francois Lyotard's way putting it, of the différend - "the unstable state and instant of language in which something which ought to be able to be phrased cannot yet be phrased".
