    Background. Snowboarding is the fastest growing wintersport. it is estimated that 5 to 10% of the slope users are snowboarders already. In last winters snowboardings has been introduced in Slovenia ... too, and its popularity is growing rapidly specially among teenagers. "Snowboarding boom" is associated with an increase of snowboarding injuries. Characteristics of snowboarding injuries are discused. Patients and methods. During three ski-seasons (1993/94, 1994) 95 and 1995/96) 53 snowboarding injuries were registered by the rescue teams of five Gorenjska ski center (Kobla, Kranjska Gora, Krvavec, Straža/Bled, Vogel). In addition, 9 unregistered injuries, 2 injuries from theother slopes and 4 injuries from abroad were included to the analysis. Results. 68 injured snowboarders had 70 injuries: 52 upper extremity (74.2%), 9 lower extremity (12.9%), 6 trunk (8.6%) and 3 head injuries (4.3%). Inthe upper extremity, injuries of wrist were the most numerous (59.6% of all injuries). There were 30 fractures (42.9%), 19 sprains (27.1%), 11 dislocations (15.7%) and 5 contusions (7.1%); two patients with head injury sustained concussion, one had a wound of the scalp. More than half of the fractures were in the wrist (56.7%). Conclusions. In future, more snowboardinginjuries are expected due to increased number of snowboarders. A changed spectrum of injuries should be considered. In contrast to alpine skiing, where the knee is injured mostly, the greast number of snowboarding injuries involve the wrist. The typeof injury depends on equipment, as well ason the snowboarder's knowledge, his/her experience and skill. Beginners are more prone to injuries.
