  • Višinska bolezen = High-altitude illness
    Verovnik, Franc
Background. In the recent years more and more people are visiting high altitude areas. With high altitude the availability of oxygen in the air decreases, what is the basis of high-altitude illness. ... The main reason for this illness is characterized by simple statement: "Too fast too high!" Despite expanded understanding of high-altitude illness, travellers often failto recognize the significance of its symptoms and over a period of hours or days they may suffer from acute mountain sickness, which may develop into potentially lifethreatening forms of altitude illness: high-altitude cerebral edema or high-altitude pulmonary edema. These three illnesses are not clearly delineated and often overlap considerably. Early and proper recognition of their symptoms and signs is the mainstay for effective treatment. Prevention is by far the best way to aviod high altitude related health problems. Conclusions. As high-altitude illness is both potentially fatal and readilly preventable, educating travellers about the potential health hazards at high altitude is essential.
