Neuromuscular diseases (NMD) are diseases of motor cells in the anterior spinal horns, diseases of peripheral nerves, of the neuromuscular junction andof the skeletal muscles. Diseases of motor cells ... are called spinal muscularatrophies or other diseases of the motor neurons, diseases of the peripheral nerves are neuropathies while the skeletal muscle diseases are designated as myopathies. Classification of NMD is based mainly on the anatomical localisation of the primary disease process within the motor unit and on their clinical presentation. The latter includes: type of inheritance (in case of inherited disease), age at onset, the degree of profession and the dominant type of musscular involvement (e. g., limb-girdle, distal). Important for classification are also some laboratory diagnostic tests: EMG, serum CK, and muscle or nerve biopsies. In the last 10 years DNA analysis has become an essential diagnostic test. Epidemiologic studies show an enormous number of different types of NMD, of which even the most common types are relatively rare. The Slovene NMD Register currently includes 1137 patients.
