  • Treatment of migraine: selective 5HT[sub]1 agonists in 1999 = Zdravljenje migrene: selektivni agonisti 5HT[spodaj]1 v letu 1999
    Salonen, Reijo ; Saiers, Jane
Sumatrpitan is the first medication specifically developed to treat migraine, and the first 5TH, agonist shown to be effective with a demonstrated clinical safety profile. Sumatriptan is available in ... tablet, nasal spray, injectable, and in some countries, suppository formulations. In controlled studies, approximately 80% of patients treated with sumatriptan injection (6 mg) and 70% of patients treated with sumatriptan tables (25 mg, 50 mg, 100 mg) or sumatriptan nasal spray (20 mg) experience pain relief 2 hours after dosing. The times to onset of action for pain relief with sumatriptan injection, nasalspray, and tablets are 10 minutes, 15 minutes, and 30 minutes, respectively. A number of other 5TH, agonists such as naratrptan, zolmitriptan, rizatriptan have recently been introduced in tablet form for theacute treatment of migraine. Experience with the newer 5TH, agonist tabletsto date suggests that, generally speaking, they have similar peak efficacies and times to onset of action to those of sumatriptan talbets, with no tablet showing an onset of action before 30 minuts postdose. The availability of multipe 5TH, agonist tablets and the choice of formulations with sumatriptan allow the clinician to tailor therapy to the needs of the individual patient.
