The book presents a wealth of historical cartographic representations of Slovenian territory. It is divided into two main parts. The first or the text part briefly presents the history of European ...cartography up to the end of the nineteenth century, maps of the Slovenian territory up to the early twentieth century and maps as cultural heritage. In the second or cartographic part, in turn, features important historical maps of the Slovenian territory presented in chronological order. The format of the book enables an excellent presentation of the presented maps. The maps presented date from the mid-sixteenth century, when the first independent maps of present-day Slovenia were produced, to the beginning of the twentieth century, when cartography developed into a modern discipline. The aim of this book is to present the extensive Slovenian cartographic heritage.
Projects of digitisation of cartographic material are a part of important projects of digitisation of the world cultural heritage, taking place in libraries, museums, and archives around the world. ...20 most significant maps of Slovenian territory from the 16th to the mid 19th century were digitised within the pilot project of the Map and Pictorial Collection of the National and University Library in Ljubljana and Geodetics Institute of Slovenia. Various analogue-digital conversion procedures, including scanning and digital photography, as well as scanogram processing procedures were used during the project.
The Map and Pictorial Collection of the National and University Library of Slovenia encompasses map and pictorial documents that are part of the national collection. New technologies such as ...geographic information systems (GIS) provide a novel way to display, access, and research the valuable, interdisciplinary holdings of an institution. This paper discusses a pilot, Web-based application that explores the possibilities of GIS by creating a virtual collection of diverse materials. Spatial data are the basis for this digital archive on which other pictorial elements, such as views and portrait images, are connected by hyperlinks.
