Cannabis is the most commonly used illegal drug in the world and it has several adverse effects such as anxiety, panic reactions and psychotic symptoms. In this study, we aimed to evaluate oxidant, ...anti-oxidant status and cytokine levels in individuals with cannabis use disorder.
Thirty-four patients with cannabis use disorder and 34 healthy controls were enrolled to the study. Serum total antioxidant status, total oxidant status and cytokine levels were investigated in patients with cannabis use disorder and healthy controls.
We found increased levels of total oxidant status, oxidative stress index and interleukin (IL) 1β, IL-6, IL-8, and tumor necrosis factor (TNF) α in individuals with cannabis dependency compared to healthy people. When we compared total antioxidant status, IL-12, and interferon (IFN) γ levels, there were no differences in both groups. There was positive correlation between IL-6 and total oxidant status, oxidative stress index levels.
The oxidative balance of individuals with cannabis use disorder was impaired and they had higher levels of IL-1β, IL-6, IL-8, and TNF-α, which is a pro-inflammatory cytokine and indicates increased inflammation compared to healthy controls. Thus, these findings suggest that cannabis increased inflammation and impaired the oxidative balance.

AIM: To determine whether Nigella sativa prevents hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury to the liver. METHODS: Thirty rats were divided into three groups as sham (Group 1), control (Group 2), and ...Nigella sativa (NS) treatment group (Group 3). All rats underwent hepatic ischemia for 45 min followed by 60 min period of reperfusion. Rats were intraperitoneally infused with only 0.9% saline solution in group 2. Rats in group 3 received NS (0.2 mL/kg) intraperitoneally, before ischemia and before reperfusion. Blood samples and liver tissues were harvested from the rats, and then the rats were sacrifi ced. Serum aspartate aminotransferase (AST), alanine aminotransferase (ALT), and lactate dehydrogenase (LDH) levels were determined. Total antioxidant capacity (TAC), catalase (CAT), total oxidative status (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI) and my-eloperoxidase (MPO) in hepatic tissue were measured. Also liver tissue histopathology was evaluated by light microscopy. RESULTS: The levels of liver enzymes in group 3 weresignifi cantly lower than those in the group 2. TAC in liver tissue was significantly higher in group 3 than in group 2. TOS, OSI and MPO in hepatic tissue were signifi cantly lower in group 3 than the group 2. Histological tissue damage was milder in the NS treatment group than that in the control group. CONCLUSION: Our results suggest that Nigella sativa treatment protects the rat liver against to hepatic ischemia-reperfusion injury.
Abstract Objective Proline has an important role in the brain. Prolidase, a proline splitting enzyme, which is also involved in oxidative stress is not investigated in bipolar disorder (BD). Methods ...66 BD type I patients and 66 healthy controls were enrolled. Serum prolidase activity was measured in both groups via venous sampling. We have compared patients and controls as well as 3 subgroups of patients (24 euthymic, 22 manic, and 20 depressive patients). Results Prolidase activity was significantly higher in patients (p < 0.001, t = 14.517). There wasn't any significant difference among euthymic, manic and depressives (p = 0.305, f = 1.211). Positive predictive value was 98.5% and negative predictive value was 92.4% above the cutoff point 502.9375 U/L of prolidase activity. Conclusion Prolidase activity is impaired in BD, which may be associated with oxidative stress. Prolidase activity may be a trait marker for diagnosing bipolar disorder.
The aim of this study was to evaluate oxidative stress in various clinical forms of hepatitis B infection and to investigate its role in the development of the chronic form of the disease.
...Ninety-three patients with inactive hepatitis B surface antigen (HbsAg) carrier state (IHBCS), 65 patients with chronic hepatitis B infection (CHB), and 42 healthy adults were included in the study. The following values were measured and compared in patient groups: total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidative stress (TOS), oxidative stress index (OSI), sulfhydryl (SH), lipid peroxidation (LOOH), catalase (CAT), and ceruloplasmin. In patients with chronic hepatitis B, these values were compared with HBV DNA and fibrosis levels.
ALT, TOS, LOOH, and OSI levels were higher in the CHB group compared to the other groups (P<0.001). Catalase levels increased in the CHB and IHBCS groups compared to the control group (P<0.001). Total aminooxidant and ceruloplasmin levels were found to be lowest in the CHB group and highest in the control group (P<0.001). Sulfhyrdyl was higher in the control group compared to the other groups (P<0.001). In the CHB group, there was no correlation between the HBV DNA and OSI (P>0.05).
These finding suggested that oxidative stress is associated with hepatitis B activity.
Paraoxonase-1 (PON-1), which has PON and arylesterase activities, is a high-density lipoprotein (HDL)-bound antioxidant enzyme that inhibits atherosclerosis. Diabetes has been shown to have an impact ...on oxidative stress. The effect of metabolic syndrome (MetS) on oxidative stress and PON-1 has been shown before, and PON-1 has been found to be related with accelerated atherogenesis. This study aimed to determine the oxidative state and PON and arylesterase activities in non-diabetic MetS and non-MetS obese patients.
Thirty obese patients (3 M and 27 F) without MetS, 40 non-diabetic obese patients (3 M and 37 F) with MetS, and 30 controls (2 M and 28 F) were enrolled.
A 75 g glucose tolerance test was performed. PON-1, PON, arylesterase, total antioxidant status (TAS), high-sensitive C-reactive protein (hsCRP), and metabolic parameters were analyzed.
PON and arylesterase activities were similar between the groups, while TAS was low in both MetS and obese groups compared to controls (P<0.01 and P<0.05 respectively). CRP was higher in the MetS group compared with the obese and control groups (P<0.01 and P<0.001 respectively). In both the obese and MetS groups, CRP showed a positive correlation with body mass index (BMI). TAS was negatively correlated with BMI, waist circumference, triglyceride levels, and systolic and diastolic blood pressures (P<0.001).
Oxidative stress is altered in non-diabetic MetS and non-MetS obese patients, but PON and arylesterase activities seem not to be affected. This result may be due to the absence of diabetes, the most severe form of altered carbohydrate metabolism.
Objective. The purpose of this study was to investigate the effects of the mode of delivery on the oxidant and antioxidant systems in mothers and infants and to demonstrate which mode leads more ...oxidative stress.
Methods. The participants were divided into two groups according to the mode of their labour and delivery: group 1 (n = 33) women with normal labour and delivery and group 2 (n = 33) with scheduled caesarean section (C/S) and delivery. The maternal, cord, and infant blood samples in both groups were collected. The serum total antioxidant capacity (TAC) and the total oxidant status (TOS) were evaluated by using an automated colorimetric measurement method.
Results. The parameters indicating oxidative stress (TOS, oxidative stress index, and lipid hydroperoxide) in maternal, cord, and newborn blood samples were higher in patients delivering with C/S than those normal spontaneous vaginal deliveries (NSVD) patient group, while it was vice versa for TAC.
Conclusions. It may be concluded that both the mothers and neonates in C/S group are exposed to higher oxidative stress as compared with those in NSVD group and the antioxidant mechanisms are insufficient to cope with this stress during C/S. This result indicates that the normal delivery through the physiological route is healthier for the bodies of mothers and infants.
Aim: To compare the levels of serum prolidase activity and oxidative stress markers, including total oxidative status (TOS), total antioxidant capacity (TAC), oxidative stress index (OSI), and total ...free sulfhydryl (–SH) in healthy pregnant women and pregnant women with intrauterine growth restricted infants.
Methods: Serum samples were obtained from 18 healthy third trimester pregnancies and 14 pregnancies complicated by fetal growth restriction (FGR). The criteria for FGR were clinical evidence of suboptimal growth, ultrasonographic demonstration of deviation from normal percentiles of growth, and birthweight under the 10th percentile. We spectrophotometrically measured serum prolidase activity, TAC, TOS, and –SH levels. Oxidative stress was determined from total antioxidant capacity and total oxidant status measurement and calculation of the oxidative stress index.
Results: Serum TAC and –SH levels were significantly lower in the FGR group than in the healthy control group (P = 0.001, P < 0.001, respectively), whereas TOS level, OSI value, and prolidase activity were significantly higher (P = 0.003, P < 0.001, P < 0.001, respectively). Prolidase activity was positively correlated with TOS and OSI values (rho = 0.552, P = 0.041 and rho = 0.635, P = 0.015, respectively) and negatively correlated with TAC and –SH levels (rho = −0.578, P = 0.030 and rho = −0.622, P = 0.018, respectively).
Conclusion: The present study shows that serum prolidase activity and oxidative stress are significantly associated with the presence of FGR and that the correlation between serum prolidase activity and markers of oxidative stress are represented as increased serum TOS level and decreased serum TAC and –SH levels, suggesting an association of collagen turnover and oxidative stress in vascular dysfunction.
In the pathogenesis of atherosclerosis, oxidative stress plays a major role in plaque instability, rupture, and erosion, which subsequently leads to thrombus formation and causes total ...infarct-related artery (IRA) occlusion. We investigated the relationship between spontaneous reperfusion (SR) of IRA and oxidative stress in patients with anterior ST-segment elevation myocardial infarction (STEMI) undergoing primary percutaneous coronary intervention. A total of 341 consecutive patients with anterior STEMI were prospectively included in the present study. Patients were divided into 2 groups according to their thrombolysis in myocardial infarction (TIMI) flow grade: SR group (66 patients, TIMI flow 3) and non-SR group (275 patients, TIMI flow 0-2). On multivariate logistic regression analysis, oxidative stress index (β = 0.868, 95% confidence interval CI = 0.806-0.934, P < .001), neutrophil to lymphocyte ratio, uric acid, mean platelet volume, Killip 2 to 4 class, and initial SYNTAX score were independently associated with SR. Oxidative stress as well as inflammation may play a pivotal role in the pathogenesis of SR in patients with STEMI.
The correlation of S100A8/S100A9 with various inflammatory conditions, including autoimmune diseases have been reported. There is no study investigating the levels of S100A8/S100A9 in autoimmune ...thyroid diseases (AITD).
We aimed to evaluate the level of serum S100A8/S100A9 in AITD.
Case control study.
Fifty patients with AITD (25 Hashimoto's thyroiditis (HT) and 25 Graves' disease (GD)) were included in the study. Twenty seven healthy subjects participated as a control group. Blood samples were obtained in the 3 months after the initiation of medical treatment. Serum levels of total antioxidant status (TAS), total oxidative status (TOS), total free sulfhydryl (SH), lipid hydroperoxide (LOOH) and S100A8/S100A9 were analyzed.
The patients with AITD had significantly higher S100A8/S100A9, OSI, LOOH and TOS levels than the healthy control group. There was no significant difference between GD and HT patients in terms of S100A8/S100A9, TOS and OSI levels. S100A8/S100A9 level was positively correlated with LOOH, TOS and OSI levels but negatively correlated with -SH level in the patients with AITD.
Serum S100A8/S100A9 levels were increased in patients with AITD and positively correlated with LOOH, TOS and OSI whereas negatively correlated with SH.
