The purpose of this study was to characterize and present the distribution of heavy metals especially Cd on agricultural and non-agricultural lands and river sediments in relation to soil erosion and ...topography status in watersheds. The study was conducted for a detailed soil survey by collecting 146 soil sample based on land use, soil family and topography position and 23 river sediments sample. The Cd was extracted by 0.1 M HCl and determined by ICP. The result showed that the concentration of Cd in soil and river sediment were low in toxicity based on FAO recommendation (Cd 0.4 mg/kg) with only 4 out of 169 sampling sites contained Cd exceeding the toxicity level. Volcanic ash from Mount Talang Volcano is a natural source of Cd in Sumani watershed. Cd concentration was low in areas with high soil erosion, which indicate material translocation caused by high soil erosion that accumulates sediment in plains and rivers. Agricultural soil was found to be low in soil pH and clay accompanied by high R factor and upland topography hence the increase in Cd concentration of the soil. The study concluded that Cd abundance in soils may be influenced by soil pH, texture, total carbon, erosion factors, and topography.
Poor germination and subsequent low grain yield of dry seeded upland rice in the existing anaerobic and short niche between lowland rice and dry season crops in the inland valley necessitate the ...screening of 19 rice varieties. The identification of vigorous growth and short duration upland rice variety in anaerobic condition would optimize this niche. The potted experiment was carried out in the screen house of the Department of Crop Science and Horticulture, Federal University Oye-Ekiti, Ikole campus in 2015 to screen and evaluate the performance of upland rice varieties in inundated soils with a view to selecting the suitable variety or varieties that will fit into the existing niche in the inland valley. ≤ 0.05 %) different. The number of tillers observed in WAB 56-104, NERICA 4, NERICA 6, NERICA 3, NERICA 5, NERICA 10, NERICA 9, ARICA 4 NERICA 1, FARO 63, FARO 65 and NERICA 8 varieties were significantly (
< 0.05) lower than those of
varieties. The numbers of days to 50 % flowering of NERICA 1, NERICA 2, NERICA 10, NERICA 5, NERICA 9, NERICA 3, NERICA 7, NERICA 8, ARICA 4 and WAB 56-104 varieties were the lowest. Although
brown,
white varieties had the highest grain yields per plant, their maturity period exceeded the short period. Thus, NERICA 2 and NERICA 5 varieties which had lower number of days to flowering could be considered as candidate varieties that can be optimized in the niche in question.
This study examined the effect of information sources on farmers’ adoption of Sawah eco-technology in Nigeria. Purposive sampling technique was used to select 166 sawah farmers from Delta, Ebonyi, ...Kebbi, Kwara, Niger and Ondo states. Interview guide was used to elicit information on the farmers’ personal and production characteristics, sources of information and the sawah eco-technologies. Frequency counts, percentages, means, and chi-square were used to analyse the data. The results of the study revealed that average years of rice production and sawah rice production of the respondents were 34.0 years and 6.9 years respectively. The average farm size and yield of sawah rice of the respondents were 0.46 ha and 3.25 tonnes/ha, respectively. Commonly adopted sawah eco-technologies by the farmers were nursery bed preparations (100.0%), bund construction (92.9%), canal construction (84.9%), flooding (78.3%), puddling (73.4%) and use of power tiller (65.2%). The main sources of information on sawah by the respondents were contact farmers (92.4%), farmers’ association (87.3%), extension agents (87.3%), researchers (79.3%) and friends/relations (77.9%). There was significant (p<0.05) association between respondents’ use of contact farmers (χ2 = 31.28), extension agents (χ2 = 22.19), farmers association (χ2 = 23.06), researchers (χ2 = 19.62) and friends / relations (χ2 = 31.09) and adoption of sawah eco-technology. This study concluded that information sources are important in dissemination of sawah technologies in Nigeria. Therefore, improving the use of information sources that significantly affect adoption of sawah technology should be encouraged among farmers.Keywords: Information sources, Sawah eco-technology, technology adoption
The study determined the effects of workplace conflict on employees’ job performance in Ogun State Agro-service Corporation (OGASC). Multistage sampling technique was used to select 77 respondents. ...Data were collected through the administration of questionnaires and were analysed using frequency, percentage, and mean. The presence of functional staff union to minimize conflict (x̅ = 2.99) ranked as the first indication of reduced conflict, followed by existence of favouritism (x̅ = 2.51) which was ranked highest as an indication of conflict escalating factor by the respondents. Job performance of the respondents was not adversely affected by the workplace conflict they experienced. Therefore, the management of OGASC should ensure improvement in the deployment of the used resolution strategies to drastically reduce conflict for better performance of the employees.
