We report on a measurement of Spin Density Matrix Elements (SDMEs) in hard exclusive Formula omitted meson muoproduction on the proton at COMPASS using 160 GeV/c polarised Formula omitted and Formula ...omitted beams impinging on a liquid hydrogen target. The measurement covers the range 5.0 GeV/ Formula omitted Formula omitted 17.0 GeV/ Formula omitted, with the average kinematics Formula omitted 2.1 (GeV/c) Formula omitted, Formula omitted GeV/ Formula omitted, and Formula omitted (GeV/c) Formula omitted. Here, Formula omitted denotes the virtuality of the exchanged photon, W the mass of the final hadronic system and Formula omitted the transverse momentum of the Formula omitted meson with respect to the virtual-photon direction. The measured non-zero SDMEs for the transitions of transversely polarised virtual photons to longitudinally polarised vector mesons ( Formula omitted) indicate a violation of s-channel helicity conservation. Additionally, we observe a sizeable contribution of unnatural-parity-exchange (UPE) transitions that decreases with increasing W. The results provide important input for modelling Generalised Parton Distributions (GPDs). In particular, they may allow to evaluate in a model-dependent way the contribution of UPE transitions and assess the role of parton helicity-flip GPDs in exclusive Formula omitted production.
This Letter reports new results on muon neutrino disappearance from NOvA, using a 14 kton detector equivalent exposure of $6.05\times10^{20}$ protons-on-target from the NuMI beam at the Fermi ...National Accelerator Laboratory. The measurement probes the muon-tau symmetry hypothesis that requires maximal mixing ($\theta_{23} = \pi/4$). Assuming the normal mass hierarchy, we find $\Delta m^2 = (2.67 \pm 0.11)\times 10^{-3}$ eV$^2$ and $\sin^2 \theta_{23}$ at the two statistically degenerate values $0.404^{+0.030}_{-0.022}$ and $0.624^{+0.022}_{-0.030}$, both at the 68% confidence level. Finally, our data disfavor the maximal mixing scenario with 2.6 $\sigma$ significance.
Microscopical imaging of natural, unstressed draglines or of untreated bulk samples showed two types or threads with diameters of either ∼ 1–2 μm or 4–5 μm, which could be identified as products of ...the minor or major ampullate glands. The threads had a circular profile in serial cross sections and are surrounded by a thin outer layer of a different material within the section. Such fibrillar configurations were also found in untreated threads or in the same serial sections of transmission electron microscopy (TEM) samples by means of the special technique of laser scanning microscopy. In TEM slides, numerous cavities with the same circular profile were detectable, and the length of these cavities is variable from 40–300 nm. The threads are oriented parallel and twisted around themselves to construct a double thread. In the interface between the two single threads, bridge‐like structures are prominent. The single untreated thread consists of cylindrical fibers with a diameter of approximately 1–1.5 μm. Apparently more than eight fibers are within a thread and each fiber is composed of a great number of fibrils with a diameter of about 150 nm. The surface of threads is coated with a characteristic layer ∼ 150–250 nm thick that contains glycoproteins. These were demonstrated for the first time by labeling with concanavalin A lectin‐gold complex and are dependent on the diameter and length of the thread. The same substances could also be detected inside the single thread. The skin can be removed completely or partially by mechanical treatment, or by washing with phosphate‐buffered saline or trypsin.
A Gram-positive bacterium originating from garden soil was taxonomically studied. Cells are non-motile, non-sporulating, irregular rods and cocci. The cell wall peptidoglycan contains L-ornithine as ...diagnostic diamino acid and an interpeptide bridge consisting of L-Orn<--L-Ala<--Gly<--D-Asp. The major menaquinone is MK-8(H4). 13-Methyl tetradecanoic acid and 14-methyl pentadecanoic acid are the predominant fatty acids. The polar lipids are phosphatidylinositol, phosphatidylglycerol, diphosphatidylglycerol, three unknown glycolipids and three unknown phospholipids. Mycolic acids are absent. The DNA G+C composition is 70 mol%. The acyl type of the glycan chain of peptidoglycan is acetyl. Glucose is the dominating whole cell sugar; arabinose, rhamnose and xylose are present in traces. Results of 16S rDNA sequence comparisons revealed that strain HKI 0124T represents a novel lineage within the suborder Micrococcineae of the order Actinomycetales adjacent to the recently described genus Ornithinicoccus. On the basis of the clearly pronounced morphological, physiological, chemotaxonomic and phylogenetic differences between strain HKI 0124T and all members of the suborder Micrococcineae, it is proposed to assign strain HKI 0124T to a new genus and species, Ornithinimicrobium humiphilum gen. nov., sp. nov. The type and only strain is HKI 0124T (= DSM 12362T = CIP 106634T).
Results are reported from an improved measurement of νμ → νe transitions by the NOvA experiment. Using an exposure equivalent to 6.05 × 1020 protons on target, 33 νe candidates are observed with a ...background of 8.2 ± 0.8 (syst.). In this paper, combined with the latest NOvA νμ disappearance data and external constraints from reactor experiments on sin22θ13, the hypothesis of inverted mass hierarchy with θ23 in the lower octant is disfavored at greater than 93% C.L. for all values of δCP.
A search with the ATLAS detector is presented for the Standard Model Higgs boson produced by vector-boson fusion and decaying to a pair of bottom quarks, using 20.2 fb(-1) of LHC proton-proton ...collision data at root s - 8 TeV. The signal is searched for as a resonance in the invariant mass distribution of a pair of jets containing b-hadrons in vector-boson-fusion candidate events. The yield is measured to be -0.8 +/- 2.3 times the Standard Model cross-section for a Higgs boson mass of 125 GeV. The upper limit on the cross-section times the branching ratio is found to be 4.4 times the Standard Model cross-section at the 95% confidence level, consistent with the expected limit value of 5.4 (5.7) in the background-only (Standard Model production) hypothesis.
