Comparative studies of functional properties among closely related mushroom species, supported by molecular identification, standard cultivation and extraction protocols, are not well ...documented. We compared antioxidant and antibacterial properties of standardised hydroalcoholic extracts of four Pleurotus species (P. levis, P. ostreatus, P. pulmonarius and P. tuber‐regium). Antioxidant properties were investigated using DPPH and ABTS radical scavenging capacity, total phenolic content, β‐carotene‐linoleic and ORAC assays. Antibacterial effect was assessed using the microplate method. The functional properties of standardised mushroom extracts were different in species studied. β‐carotene–linoleic acid and ORAC assays showed high antioxidant activity, particularly in P. ostreatus. Pleurotus tuber‐regium exhibited the lowest antioxidant activity in the ORAC assay (3316.0 μmol of trolox equivalent mL−1), but exerted the most potent bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity. Bacillus subtilis showed a high degree of susceptibility to a very low concentration (3.33 μg mL−1) of P. levis extract. Remarkable antioxidant and antibacterial properties were found in P. levis and P. tuber‐regium compared to the other species studied that are cultivated commercially.
Standardised mushroom hydroalcoholic extracts from Pleurotus species, molecularly identified, showed valuable antioxidant and antimicrobial properties. Pleurotus levis represents a novel source of bioactive compounds, while P. tuber‐regium exerted the most potent bacteriostatic and bactericidal activity. Gram‐positive and Gram‐negative bacteria showed differing degrees of susceptibility to Pleurotus extracts.
Scope
There is few information about the possible health effects of a food combination based on a pre‐hispanic Mexican diet (PMD). This diet rich in fiber, polyphenols, a healthy ratio of omega ...6/omega 3 fatty acids, and vegetable protein could improve carbohydrate and lipid metabolism, gut microbiota and cognitive function.
Methods and results
We examined the effect of a PMD in a sucrose enriched high‐fat model. The PMD contains corn, beans, tomato, nopal, chia and pumpkin seeds in dehydrated form. Following induction of obesity, rats were fed PMD. PMD consumption decreased glucose intolerance, body weight gain, serum and liver triglycerides and leptin. In addition, PMD decreased the size of the adipocytes, and increased the protein abundance of UCP‐1, PPAR‐α, PGC1‐α and Tbx‐1 in white adipose tissue. Finally, the PMD significant decreased hepatic levels of ROS, oxidized proteins and GSSG/GSH ratio and an increase in the relative abundance of Bifidobacteria and the improvement of cognitive function.
Conclusion
Consumption of a PMD decreased the glucose intolerance and the biochemical abnormalities caused by the obesity by increasing the abundance of proteins involved in fatty acid oxidation, decreasing the oxidative stress and modifying the gut microbiota.
The effect of the consumption of a pre‐Hispanic Mexican diet (PMD) in rats fed a sucrose‐enriched high fat diet is discussed. The presence of soluble and insoluble fiber, antioxidants, polyunsaturated fatty acids and small amounts of docosahexaenoic acid and eicosapentaenoic acid from black beans, corn, tomato, nopal, chia and pumpkin seeds synergistically ameliorate some biochemical abnormalities in brain, adipose tissue and liver produced by obesity.
Nopal is a plant used in traditional Mexican medicine to treat diabetes. However, there is insufficient scientific evidence to demonstrate whether nopal can regulate postprandial glucose. The purpose ...for conducting this study was to evaluate the glycemic index, insulinemic index, glucose-dependent insulinotropic peptide (GIP) index, and the glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) index, and the effect of nopal on patients with type 2 diabetes after consumption of a high-carbohydrate breakfast (HCB) or high-soy-protein breakfast (HSPB) on the postprandial response of glucose, insulin, GIP, GLP-1, and antioxidant activity. In study 1, the glycemic index, insulinemic index, GIP index, and GLP-1 index were calculated for seven healthy participants who consumed 50 g of available carbohydrates from glucose or dehydrated nopal. In study 2, 14 patients with type 2 diabetes consumed nopal in HCB or HSPB with or without 300 g steamed nopal. The glycemic index of nopal was 32.5±4, insulinemic index was 36.1±6, GIP index was 6.5±3.0, and GLP-1 index was 25.9±18. For those patients with type 2 diabetes who consumed the HCB+nopal, there was significantly lower area under the curve for glucose (287±30) than for those who consumed the HCB only (443±49), and lower incremental area under the curve for insulin (5,952±833 vs 7,313±1,090), and those patients with type 2 diabetes who consumed the HSPB avoided postprandial blood glucose peaks. Consumption of the HSPB+nopal significantly reduced the postprandial peaks of GIP concentration at 30 and 45 minutes and increased the antioxidant activity after 2 hours measured by the 2,2-diphenyl-1-picrilhidracyl method. These findings suggest that nopal could reduce postprandial blood glucose, serum insulin, and plasma GIP peaks, as well as increase antioxidant activity in healthy people and patients with type 2 diabetes.
Purpose
We compared the effect of diets with different amounts and sources of dietary protein on insulin sensitivity (IS) in subjects with obesity and insulin resistance (IR).
Methods
Eighty subjects ...with obesity (BMI ≥ 30 kg/m

) and IR (Matsuda index < 4.3 and HOMA-IR ≥ 2.5) over 18 years old were randomized to four groups for a one-month period: a normal protein diet (< 20%) with a predominance of animal protein (Animal NP) or vegetable protein (Vegetable NP) and a high-protein diet (25–30%) with a predominance of animal protein (Animal HP) or vegetable protein (Vegetable HP). Baseline and final measurements of body weight, body composition, biochemical parameters, blood pressure (BP), resting energy expenditure and plasma amino acid profiles were performed.
Results
Body weight, BMI and waist circumference decreased in all groups. Interestingly, the IS improved more in the Animal HP (Matsuda index; 1.39 vs 2.58,

= 0.003) and in the Vegetable HP groups (Matsuda index; 1.44 vs 3.14,

< 0.0001) after one month. The fat mass, triglyceride levels, C-reactive protein levels and the leptin/adiponectin index decreased; while, the skeletal muscle mass increased in the Animal and Vegetable HP groups. The BP decreased in all groups except the Animal NP group.
Conclusion
Our study demonstrates that a high-protein hypocaloric diets improves IS by 60–90% after one month in subjects with obesity and IR, regardless of weight loss and the source of protein, either animal or vegetable.

This study shows a clinical case report of a kidney transplant patient who traveled from Mexico to The Netherlands and ate green vegetables in an international food restaurant. After 5 days, he ...started having diarrhea, nausea, colic, and a physical feeling of malaise. The patient only received symptomatic treatment after showing the characteristic symptoms of traveler's diarrhea. When he returned to Mexico, the clinical picture worsened, and he was hospitalized. Clinical analyses indicated dehydration and acute kidney injury stage II. Coproparasitoscopic study showed the presence of Cyclospora cayetanensis. Parenteral solutions, gastric mucosal protector, ciprofloxacin, and a soft diet were administrated as treatment. The patient was discharged 72 h later with an improvement of the kidney function.

Acetonic extracts of pecan kernels and nutshells were fractionated using Sephadex LH-20 and three fractions were obtained from each. Only fraction II of both extracts contained simple polyphenols: catechin, epicatechin and ellagic acid were identified in kernel fraction II, while only epicatechin and ellagic acid were found in shell fraction II. Total gallic and ellagic acids were quantified in acid-hydrolyzed extracts: kernels contained 1.8 and 3.6mgg−1, respectively, while nutshells contained 2.3 and 0.8mgg−1, respectively. Kernel fraction III, containing high molecular weight compounds, showed the highest antioxidant activity and better antiproliferative activity in a cancer than a non-cancer cell line. Crude extracts showed cytotoxic activity in cerebellar granule neurons (CGNs), but shell extract was more cytotoxic; in contrast only kernel extract protected CGNs from H2O2-induced cell death. Thus, high molecular weight compounds of pecan kernel show noticeable bioactive properties and should be further characterised and analyzed as a rich source of bioactive polyphenols.
Malnutrition is prevalent in pediatric populations with any disease, and it is also related to changes in body composition. In addition, recent studies have documented relationships between these ...changes and phase angle (PhA), an important parameter of functional nutritional assessment. PhA could be a new marker of nutritional status. Many studies have generated information about the association between PhA and malnutrition in various pathologies, although the vast majority of this information is from adult populations. In this systematic review, we answered the following question: What is the association between PhA and the nutritional status in pediatric populations?
We performed a systematic search of the Medline/PubMed and Latin American and Caribbean Health Sciences Literature databases (LILACS) databases for studies published up to October 2022. The inclusion criteria were pediatric subjects, which reported the relationship between PhA and the nutritional status with any objective nutritional indicator, and PhA was measured by electric impedance and reported at 50 kHz. We synthesized data from the studies that reported cutoff analysis of PhA with receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curves, mean PhA values presented by nutritional status strata, and correlations between PhA and nutritional status indicators. We assessed the risk of bias by using the Quality Assessment Tool for Observational Cohort and Cross-Sectional Studies and the Quality Assessment for Diagnostic Accuracy Studies.
Of the 126 studies we identified, 15 met the inclusion criteria. The included studies reported the association between PhA and objective indicators of nutritional status, including weight-for-age z-score (WAZ) <-1 standard deviation (SD) for malnutrition, height-for-age z-score (HAZ) for malnutrition-stunting, body mass index (BMI) for the starvation state, body mass index z-score (BMIz) and BMI for malnutrition, mid-upper arm circumference (MUAC) <11 cm for severe acute malnutrition (SAM), and fat-free mass index z-score (FFMIz) <-2 z-score for moderate malnutrition, among others. The report of these associations between PhA and nutritional status was based on cutoff points generated with ROC curve analysis or comparison of mean PhA values, which were reported stratified by the presence or absence of malnutrition, and correlations between PhA and anthropometric indicators for the evaluation of the nutritional status in the pediatric population. It was difficult to compare the studies due to the heterogeneity of the bioelectrical impedance analysis models used, how PhA was reported (standardized, percentiles, or degrees), and the anthropometric indicators used to diagnose malnutrition.
The early identification of malnutrition is relevant to establish the correct nutritional treatment; PhA appears to be a sensitive indicator of nutritional status and is easy to obtain. Although the results of this review are inadequate to establish PhA cutoff points associated with malnutrition in pediatric populations, in most of the studies, there was an association between PhA and objective indicators of nutritional status.

Introduction: currently, various tools have been designed to timely detect the risk of malnutrition in hospitalized children. In those with a diagnosis of congenital heart disease (CHD), there is ...only one tool developed in Canada: Infant Malnutrition and Feeding Checklist for Congenital Heart Disease (IMFC:CHD), which was designed in English. Objective: to evaluate the validity and reliability of the Spanish adaptation of the IMFC:CHD tool in infants with CHD. Methods: cross-sectional validation study carried out in two stages. The first, of translation and cross-cultural adaptation of the tool, and the second, of validation of the new translated tool, where evidence of reliability and validity were obtained. Results: in the first stage, the tool was translated and adapted to the Spanish language; for the second stage, 24 infants diagnosed with CHD were included. The concurrent criterion validity between the screening tool and the anthropometric evaluation was evaluated, obtaining a substantial agreement (κ = 0.660, 95 % CI: 0.36-0.95) and for the predictive criterion validity, which was compared with the days of hospital stay, moderate agreement was obtained (κ = 0.489, 95 % CI: 0.1-0.8). The reliability of the tool was evaluated through external consistency, measuring the inter-observer agreement, obtaining a substantial agreement (κ = 0.789, 95 % CI: 0.5-0.9), and the reproducibility of the tool showed an almost perfect agreement (κ = 1, CI 95 %: 0.9-1.0). Conclusions: the IMFC:CHD tool showed adequate validity and reliability, and could be considered as a useful resource for the identification of severe malnutrition.
Abstract
Excessive adipose tissue can lead to metabolic abnormalities resulting in lipid alteration and oxidative stress (OS) status. The lipid accumulation product (LAP) index is a biomarker that ...indicates central lipid accumulation and has been proposed as an accurate and independent indicator of risk for several cardiometabolic related conditions. There is a lack of information about the possible association of LAP and OS biomarkers. Therefore, this work aimed to investigate the relationship between LAP and OS biomarkers in adults. A cross-sectional study was performed in 250 subjects attending the Hospital Regional de Alta Especialidad de la Península de Yucatán. Anthropometrical and clinical parameters were measured. The serum oxidative biomarkers such as malondialdehyde (MDA) and total antioxidant capacity (TAC) were evaluated by spectrophotometry and by the oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC), respectively. A positive and significant correlation between serum levels of MDA and LAP (r = 0.162, p = 0.010) was observed. This relationship was stronger in women (r = 0.189, p = 0.013) than in men. The association between them remained significant after adjusting for confounders (r = 0.23, p < 0.001). A cutoff of LAP of 73.73 predicts high levels of MDA in women aged between 40 and 59. LAP index was associated with OS biomarkers in women and men from Yucatan, Mexico. Therefore, the elevation of the LAP index could identify an imbalance in the redox status.
Obesity and its comorbidities are a severe public health problem worldwide. The use of bioactive compounds found in some foods has been demonstrated to ameliorate the metabolic abnormalities ...associated with obesity. The purpose of this study was to assess whether the bioactive compounds present in aguamiel concentrate (AC) from Agave salmiana could attenuate glucose intolerance and hepatic steatosis in mice fed a high fat (HF) diet. HPLC-ELSD analysis showed that AC contained several saponins. The consumption of an AC extract rich in saponins reduced weight gain and fat mass and lowered serum glucose, insulin and LDL-cholesterol levels in mice fed a HF diet. Additionally, mice fed the saponin extract exhibited a reduced HOMA index and hepatic lipid levels and increased expression of genes involved in fatty acid oxidation. Saponins increased white adipose tissue browning, AMPK phosphorylation, fatty acid oxidation, and mitochondrial activity in skeletal muscle and energy expenditure in mice fed the HF diet. These metabolic changes were accompanied by an increase in the abundance of Akkermansia muciniphila in the gut microbiota. Therefore, Agave salmiana saponins can be an alternative to attenuate the metabolic changes that accompany obesity.
