Summary Background Carriers of APOE ε2 and ε4 have an increased risk of intracerebral haemorrhage (ICH) in lobar regions, presumably because of the effects of these gene variants on risk of cerebral ...amyloid angiopathy. We aimed to assess whether these variants also associate with severity of ICH, in terms of haematoma volume at presentation and subsequent outcome. Methods We investigated the association of APOE ε2 and ε4 with ICH volume and outcomes in patients with primary ICH in three phases: a discovery phase of 865 individuals of European ancestry from the Genetics of Cerebral Hemorrhage on Anticoagulation study, and replication phases of 946 Europeans (replication 1) and 214 African-Americans (replication 2) from an additional six studies. We also assessed the association of APOE variants with ICH volume and outcomes in meta-analyses of results from all three phases, and the association of APOE ε4 with mortality in a further meta-analysis including data from previous reports. Admission ICH volume was quantified on CT scan. We assessed functional outcome (modified Rankin scale score 3–6) and mortality at 90 days. We used linear regression to establish the effect of genotype on haematoma volume and logistic regression to assess the effect on outcome from ICH. Findings For patients with lobar ICH, carriers of the APOE ε2 allele had larger ICH volumes than did non-carriers in the discovery phase (p=2·5×10−5 ), in both replication phases (p=0·008 in Europeans and p=0·016 in African-Americans), and in the meta-analysis (p=3·2×10−8 ). In the meta-analysis, each copy of APOE ε2 increased haematoma size by a mean of 5·3 mL (95% CI 4·7–5·9; p=0·004). Carriers of APOE ε2 had increased mortality (odds ratio OR 1·50, 95% CI 1·23–1·82; p=2·45×10−5 ) and poorer functional outcomes (modified Rankin scale score 3–6; 1·52, 1·25–1·85; p=1·74×10−5 ) compared with non-carriers after lobar ICH. APOE ε4 was not associated with lobar ICH volume, functional outcome, or mortality in the discovery phase, replication phases, or meta-analysis of these three phases; in our further meta-analysis of 2194 patients, this variant did not increase risk of mortality (1·08, 0·86–1·36; p=0·52). APOE allele variants were not associated with deep ICH volume, functional outcome, or mortality. Interpretation Vasculopathic changes associated with the APOE ε2 allele might have a role in the severity and clinical course of lobar ICH. Screening of patients who have ICH to identify the ε2 variant might allow identification of those at increased risk of mortality and poor functional outcomes. This study was conducted to document the pattern of antral follicular wave emergence throughout the 14-day, progesterone (P4)-based estrous synchronization protocol in ewes that were maintained in ...subtropical conditions, during the period of increasing day lengths (ID), decreasing day lengths (DD), and the transitional period (TP). In addition, the influence of ovarian status (i.e., size of ovarian antral follicles and the presence of corpora lutea) at the outset of P4 treatment on ensuing ovarian follicular wave development was examined. Sexually mature Santa Inês ewes (n=70) were subjected to one of the two estrous synchronization protocols in the three seasons. On Day 0, the ewes received an i.m. injection of prostaglandin F2α and an intravaginal P4-releasing device that remained in place for 14days (G-1CIDR) or was replaced on Day 7 (G-2CIDR). Daily ultrasonography of ovaries was conducted from Days 0 to 15. Mean (±SEM) numbers of follicular waves per ewe were 3.7±0.1 and 3.6±0.1 for G-1CIDR and G-2CIDR (P>0.05). The number of emerging follicular waves was greater (P<0.05) during the ID period than during the TP and DD periods (4.0±0.1, 3.4±0.1 and 3.6±0.1, respectively). The presence of medium-sized antral follicles (4.0 to 5.75mm) in the absence of corpora lutea at the time of CIDR insertion tended to advance follicular wave emergence. Although the long-term P4 treatment was not originally designed to synchronize follicular waves, there was a distinctive pattern of follicular wave dynamics during the period of application of CIDRs that was affected mainly by the number of emerging follicular waves and ovarian status at CIDR insertion.

This paper describes the hardware and operations of the Neutrinos at the Main Injector (NuMI) beam at Fermilab. It elaborates on the design considerations for the beam as a whole and for individual ...elements. The most important design details of individual components are described. Beam monitoring systems and procedures, including the tuning and alignment of the beam and NuMI long-term performance, are also discussed.
We report results from the first search for ν_{μ}→ν_{e} transitions by the NOvA experiment. In an exposure equivalent to 2.74×10^{20} protons on target in the upgraded NuMI beam at Fermilab, we ...observe 6 events in the Far Detector, compared to a background expectation of 0.99±0.11(syst) events based on the Near Detector measurement. A secondary analysis observes 11 events with a background of 1.07±0.14(syst). The 3.3σ excess of events observed in the primary analysis disfavors 0.1π<δ_{CP}<0.5π in the inverted mass hierarchy at the 90% C.L.
A randomised trial of prenatal multiple micronutrient supplementation in Nepalese women increased birthweight and weight at 2 years of age in offspring, compared to those born to mothers who only ...received iron and folic acid supplements. Further follow-up of this cohort provided an opportunity to investigate the effect of antenatal multiple micronutrients on subsequent lung function by measuring spirometry at 7-9 years of age in C: hildren born during the trial. 841 children (80% of the cohort) were seen at mean±sd 8.5±0.4 years. Technically successful spirometry results were obtained in 793 (94.3%) children, 50% of whom had been randomised to micronutrient supplementation. Background characteristics, including anthropometry, were similar in the two allocation groups. Lung function was also similar, mean (95% CI) difference in z-scores (supplementation minus control) was -0.08 (-0.19-0.04), -0.05 (-0.17-0.06) and -0.04 (-0.15-0.07) for forced expiratory volume in 1 s (FEV1), forced vital capacity and FEV1/FVC, respectively. Compared with healthy white children, FEV1 and FVC in the "healthy" Nepalese children were ∼1 (∼13%) z-score lower, with no difference in FEV1/FVC. We conclude that, compared with routine iron and folic acid, multiple micronutrient supplementation during pregnancy has no effect on spirometric lung function in Nepalese children at 8.5 years of age.
Different drain field architectures have been recently investigated to reduce field-enhanced effects in conventional self-aligned polysilicon thin-film transistor (TFT) architecture, induced by the ...intense electric fields at the drain junction. Among these, gate overlapped lightly doped drain (GOLDD) architecture has been shown to be effective in reducing the drain field in both on and off states of the TFT, without introducing appreciable series resistance effects. In this paper, we investigate the electrical characteristics, both in the on- and in the off-regime, of GOLDD polysilicon TFTs, made with different LDD doses, by combining experimental data with two-dimensional (2-D) numerical analysis. We also demonstrate that both the on-state and off-state features of the GOLDD structure can be readily understood in terms of a simple, new model, based upon two TFTs series. This is consistent both with the experimental data and the results of full 2-D simulations. This paper not only clarifies the dependence of kink effect, leakage current, and series resistance upon the LDD-doping, but also provides the guidelines to optimize physical parameters of GOLDD TFTs.

The structure of nuclei around the neutron-rich nucleus 132Sn is of particular interest due to the vicinity of the Z = 50 and N = 82 shell closures and the r-process nucleosynthetic path. Four states ...in 131Sn with a strong single-particle-like component have previously been studied via the (d,p) reaction, with limited excitation energy resolution. Here, the 130Sn(9Be,8Be)131Sn and 130Sn(13C,12C)131Sn single-neutron transfer reactions were performed in inverse kinematics at the Holifield Radioactive Ion Beam Facility using particle-γ coincidence spectroscopy. The uncertainties in the energies of the single-particle-like states have been reduced by more than an order of magnitude using the energies of γ rays. The previous tentative Jπ values have been confirmed. Decays from high-spin states in 131Sn have been observed following transfer on the isomeric component of the 130Sn beam. The improved energies and confirmed spin-parities of the p-wave states important to the r-process lead to direct-semidirect cross-sections for neutron capture on the ground state of 130Sn at 30 keV that are in agreement with previous analyses. A similar assessment of the impact of neutron-transfer on the isomer would require significant nuclear structure and reaction theory input. There are few measurements of transfer reaction on isomers, and this is the first on an isomer in the 132Sn region.
