ABSTRACT
Galactic nuclei are expected to be one of the main sites for formations of eccentric binary black holes (EBBHs), with an estimated detection rate of ${\mathcal {O}(1-100}$ yr−1) with ...Advanced LIGO (aLIGO) detectors operating at design sensitivity. The two main formation channels of these binaries are gravitational capture and the secular Kozai–Lidov mechanism, with expectedly commensurable formation rates. We used Monte Carlo simulations to construct the eccentricity distributions of EBBHs formed through these channels in galactic nuclei, at the time their gravitational-wave signals enter the aLIGO band at 10 Hz. We have found that the proportion of binary black holes entering the aLIGO band with eccentricities larger than 0.1 is ∼10 per cent for the secular Kozai–Lidov mechanism, and ∼90 per cent for gravitational capture. We show that if future EBBH detection rates with aLIGO will be dominated by EBBHs formed in galactic nuclei, then the proportions of EBBHs formed through the two main channels can be constrained to a $\Delta \mathcal {F}= 0.2$ wide 1σ confidence interval with a few tens of observations, even if parameter estimation errors are taken into account at realistic levels.

We searched for an isotropic stochastic gravitational wave background in the second data release of the International Pulsar Timing Array, a global collaboration synthesizing decadal-length ...pulsar-timing campaigns in North America, Europe, and Australia. In our reference search for a power-law strain spectrum of the form $h_c = A(f/1\, \mathrm{yr}^{-1})^{\alpha }$, we found strong evidence for a spectrally similar low-frequency stochastic process of amplitude $A = 3.8^{+6.3}_{-2.5}\times 10^{-15}$ and spectral index α = −0.5 ± 0.5, where the uncertainties represent 95 per cent credible regions, using information from the auto- and cross-correlation terms between the pulsars in the array. For a spectral index of α = −2/3, as expected from a population of inspiralling supermassive black hole binaries, the recovered amplitude is $A = 2.8^{+1.2}_{-0.8}\times 10^{-15}$. None the less, no significant evidence of the Hellings–Downs correlations that would indicate a gravitational-wave origin was found. We also analysed the constituent data from the individual pulsar timing arrays in a consistent way, and clearly demonstrate that the combined international data set is more sensitive. Furthermore, we demonstrate that this combined data set produces comparable constraints to recent single-array data sets which have more data than the constituent parts of the combination. Future international data releases will deliver increased sensitivity to gravitational wave radiation, and significantly increase the detection probability.
ABSTRACT
We describe a search for gravitational waves from compact binaries with at least one component with mass $0.2$–$1.0 \, \mathrm{M}_\odot$ and mass ratio q ≥ 0.1 in Advanced Laser ...Interferometer Gravitational-Wave Observatory (LIGO) and Advanced Virgo data collected between 2019 November 1, 15:00 utc and 2020 March 27, 17:00 utc. No signals were detected. The most significant candidate has a false alarm rate of $0.2 \, \rm {yr}^{-1}$. We estimate the sensitivity of our search over the entirety of Advanced LIGO’s and Advanced Virgo’s third observing run, and present the most stringent limits to date on the merger rate of binary black holes with at least one subsolar-mass component. We use the upper limits to constrain two fiducial scenarios that could produce subsolar-mass black holes: primordial black holes (PBH) and a model of dissipative dark matter. The PBH model uses recent prescriptions for the merger rate of PBH binaries that include a rate suppression factor to effectively account for PBH early binary disruptions. If the PBHs are monochromatically distributed, we can exclude a dark matter fraction in PBHs $f_\mathrm{PBH} \gtrsim \, 0.6$ (at 90 per cent confidence) in the probed subsolar-mass range. However, if we allow for broad PBH mass distributions, we are unable to rule out fPBH = 1. For the dissipative model, where the dark matter has chemistry that allows a small fraction to cool and collapse into black holes, we find an upper bound fDBH < 10−5 on the fraction of atomic dark matter collapsed into black holes.
The Australian, Chinese, European, Indian, and North American pulsar timing array (PTA) collaborations recently reported, at varying levels, evidence for the presence of a nanohertz gravitational ...wave background (GWB). Given that each PTA made different choices in modeling their data, we perform a comparison of the GWB and individual pulsar noise parameters across the results reported from the PTAs that constitute the International Pulsar Timing Array (IPTA). We show that despite making different modeling choices, there is no significant difference in the GWB parameters that are measured by the different PTAs, agreeing within $1\sigma$. The pulsar noise parameters are also consistent between different PTAs for the majority of the pulsars included in these analyses. We bridge the differences in modeling choices by adopting a standardized noise model for all pulsars and PTAs, finding that under this model there is a reduction in the tension in the pulsar noise parameters. As part of this reanalysis, we "extended" each PTA's data set by adding extra pulsars that were not timed by that PTA. Under these extensions, we find better constraints on the GWB amplitude and a higher signal-to-noise ratio for the Hellings and Downs correlations. These extensions serve as a prelude to the benefits offered by a full combination of data across all pulsars in the IPTA, i.e., the IPTA's Data Release 3, which will involve not just adding in additional pulsars, but also including data from all three PTAs where any given pulsar is timed by more than as single PTA.
The International Pulsar Timing Array 2nd data release is the combination of datasets from worldwide collaborations. In this study, we search for continuous waves: gravitational wave signals produced ...by individual supermassive black hole binaries in the local universe. We consider binaries on circular orbits and neglect the evolution of orbital frequency over the observational span. We find no evidence for such signals and set sky averaged 95% upper limits on their amplitude h 95 . The most sensitive frequency is 10nHz with h 95 = 9.1 10-15 . We achieved the best upper limit to date at low and high frequencies of the PTA band thanks to improved effective cadence of observations. In our analysis, we have taken into account the recently discovered common red noise process, which has an impact at low frequencies. We also find that the peculiar noise features present in some pulsars data must be taken into account to reduce the false alarm. We show that using custom noise models is essential in searching for continuous gravitational wave signals and setting the upper limit.
Under appropriate conditions of temperature and solvent composition, single-phase aqueous organic solvents are capable of liquefying lignin to form a lignin-rich liquid phase separate from the ...solvent phase, creating liquid–liquid equilibrium. The extent to which this phenomenon occurs when Kraft lignin is combined with the solvents methanol, ethanol, isopropanol, and acetone was determined, with solid–liquid (SL) to liquid–liquid (LL) phase-transition temperatures being measured over the range of applicable organic–water compositions. Lignins tested from a variety of biomass sources were all discovered to form this liquid–liquid equilibrium with aqueous ethanol solutions. The formation of such phase behavior between lignin and economical, green solvents creates new opportunities for the large-scale purification and fractionation of raw bulk (i.e., technical) lignins.
We describe updates and improvements to the BayesWave gravitational wave transient analysis pipeline, and provide examples of how the algorithm is used to analyze data from ground-based gravitational ...wave detectors. BayesWave models gravitational wave signals in a morphology-independent manner through a sum of frame functions, such as Morlet-Gabor wavelets or chirplets. BayesWave models the instrument noise using a combination of a parametrized Gaussian noise component and nonstationary and non-Gaussian noise transients. Both the signal model and noise model employ trans-dimensional sampling, with the complexity of the model adapting to the requirements of the data. The flexibility of the algorithm makes it suitable for a variety of analyses, including reconstructing generic unmodeled signals; cross-checks against modeled analyses for compact binaries; as well as separating coherent signals from incoherent instrumental noise transients (glitches). The BayesWave model has been extended to account for gravitational wave signals with generic polarization content and the simultaneous presence of signals and glitches in the data. We describe updates in the BayesWave prior distributions, sampling proposals, and burn-in stage that provide significantly improved sampling efficiency. We present standard review checks indicating the robustness and convergence of the BayesWave trans-dimensional sampler.
Lignin is a promising renewable alternative to fossil fuels for producing carbon materials such as carbon fibers, activated carbons, or carbon black. Despite extensive research, lignin-derived carbon ...materials show limited graphitization relative to comparable petroleum-derived carbons. Further, lignin-derived carbons show high variation in graphitization and electrical conductivity depending on the source of the lignin. Herein, nine lignins, derived from various feedstocks and isolation procedures, are pyrolyzed to produce biochar at 1100∘C. These lignins have a range of chemical compositions, carbon structures, and particle sizes. As a result, the pyrolysis behavior of these lignins varies, with powdered, clumped powder, and “foam” biochar morphologies resulting from finely powdered lignin. The produced biochars vary widely in both electrical conductivity, from 0.19 to 19 S/cm, and in-plane graphitic crystallite size, from 3.4 to 41.2Å. A significant decrease in electrical conductivity is identified when Na2SO4 is removed from lignin, accompanied by an increase in graphitic crystallite size. Based on this finding, a quadratic relationship between biochar graphitic crystallite aspect ratio and electrical conductivity is proposed that builds on established quasi-percolation models for biochar electrical conductivity.

A two-stage alkaline-oxidative pretreatment of hybrid poplar was investigated at scale (20 L reactor volume) with the goal of understanding how reaction conditions as well as interstage mechanical ...refining impact downstream process responses. The pretreatment comprises a first stage of alkaline delignification (alkaline pre-extraction) followed by a second delignification stage employing Cu-catalyzed alkaline hydrogen peroxide with supplemental O2 (O2-enhanced Cu-AHP). Increasing pre-extraction severity (i.e., temperature and alkali loading) and pretreatment oxidation (increasing H2O2 loading) were found to increase mass and lignin solubilization in each stage. Lignin recovered from the first stage was subjected to oxidative depolymerization and led to aromatic monomer yields as high as 23.0% by mass. Lignins recovered from the second-stage Cu-AHP pretreatment liquors were shown to exhibit aliphatic hydroxyl contents more than 6-fold higher than a typical hardwood kraft lignin, indicating that these lignins could serve as a biobased polyol for a range of polyurethane applications.
