The noncovalent forces that stabilize protein structures are not fully understood. One way to address this is to study equilibria between unfolded states and α-helices in peptides. Electrostatic ...forces-which include interactions between side chains, the backbone and side chains, and side chains and the helix macrodipole-are believed to contribute to these equilibria. Here we probe these interactions experimentally using designed peptides. We find that both terminal backbone-side chain and certain side chain-side chain interactions (which include both local effects between proximal charges and interatomic contacts) contribute much more to helix stability than side chain-helix macrodipole electrostatics, which are believed to operate at larger distances. This has implications for current descriptions of helix stability, the understanding of protein folding and the refinement of force fields for biomolecular modeling and simulations. In addition, this study sheds light on the stability of rod-like structures formed by single α-helices, which are common in natural proteins such as non-muscle myosins.
Planck has observed the entire sky from 30 GHz to 857GHz. The observed foreground emission contains contributions from different phases of the interstellar medium (ISM). We have separated the ...observed Galactic emission into the different gaseous components (atomic, molecular and ionised) in each of a number of Galactocentric rings. This technique provides the necessary information to study dust properties (emissivity, temperature, etc.), as well as other emission mechanisms as a function of Galactic radius. Templates are created for various Galactocentric radii using velocity information from atomic (neutral hydrogen) and molecular (12CO) observations. The ionised template is assumed to be traced by free-free emission as observed by WMAP, while 408 MHz emission is used to trace the synchrotron component. Gas emission not traced by the above templates, namely “dark gas”, as evidenced using Planck data, is included as an additional template, the first time such a component has been used in this way. These templates are then correlated with each of the Planck frequency bands, as well as with higher frequency data from IRAS and DIRBE along with radio data at 1.4 GHz. The emission per column density of the gas templates allows us to create distinct spectral energy distributions (SEDs) per Galactocentric ring and in each of the gaseous tracers from 1.4 GHz to 25 THz (12μm). The resulting SEDs allow us to explore the contribution of various emission mechanisms to the Planck signal. Apart from the thermal dust and free-free emission, we have probed the Galaxy for anomalous (e.g., spinning) dust as well as synchrotron emission. We find the dust opacity in the solar neighbourhood, τ/NH = 0.92 ± 0.05 × 10-25 cm2 at 250 μm, with no significant variation with Galactic radius, even though the dust temperature is seen to vary from over 25 K to under 14 K. Furthermore, we show that anomalous dust emission is present in the atomic, molecular and dark gas phases throughout the Galactic disk. Anomalous emission is not clearly detected in the ionised phase, as free-free emission is seen to dominate. The derived dust propeties associated with the dark gas phase are derived but do not allow us to reveal the nature of this phase. For all environments, the anomalous emission is consistent with rotation from polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) and, according to our simple model, accounts for (25 ± 5)% (statistical) of the total emission at 30 GHz.
Purpose
Ovarian cancer is the most common deadly cancer of gynecologic origin. Patients often are diagnosed at advanced stage with peritoneal metastasis. There are many rare histologies of ovarian ...cancer; some have outcomes worse than serous ovarian cancer. Cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC) can be considered for patients with recurrence. This study was designed to assess the impact of CRS and HIPEC on survival of patient with peritoneal metastasis from rare ovarian malignancy.
Methods
A prospective, multicentric, international database was retrospectively searched to identify all patients with rare ovarian tumor (mucinous, clear cells, endometrioid, small cell hypercalcemic, and other) and peritoneal metastasis who underwent CRS and HIPEC through the Peritoneal Surface Oncology Group International (PSOGI) and BIG-RENAPE working group. The postoperative complications, long-term results, and principal prognostic factors were analyzed.
Results
The analysis included 210 patients with a median follow-up of 43.5 months. Median overall survival (OS) was 69.3 months, and the 5-year OS was 57.7%. For mucinous tumors, median OS and DFS were not reached at 5 years. For granulosa tumors, median overall survival was not reached at 5 years, and median DFS was 34.6 months. Teratoma or germinal tumor showed median overall survival and DFS that were not reached at 5 years. Differences in OS were not statistically significant between histologies (
p
= 0.383), whereas differences in DFS were (
p
< 0.001).
Conclusions
CRS and HIPEC may increases long-term survival in selected patients with peritoneal metastasis from rare ovarian tumors especially in mucinous, granulosa, or teratoma histological subtypes.
In this paper, we report the first measurement of the parity-violating elastic electron scattering asymmetry on 27Al. The 27Al elastic asymmetry is $A_{\text{PV}}$ = 2.16 ± 0.11(stat) ± 0.16(syst) ...ppm, and was measured at $\langle Q^2\rangle$ = 0.02357 ± 0.00010 GeV$^2$, $\angleθ_{\text{lab}}$ = 7.61° ± 0.02°, and $\langle E_{\text{lab}}$ = 1.157 GeV with the Qweak apparatus at Jefferson Lab. Predictions using a simple Born approximation as well as more sophisticated distorted-wave calculations are in good agreement with this result. From this asymmetry the 27Al neutron radius $R_n$ = 2.89 ± 0.12 fm was determined using a many-models correlation technique. The corresponding neutron skin thickness $R_n – R_p$ = –0.04 ± 0.12 fm is small, as expected for a light nucleus with a neutron excess of only 1. This result thus serves as a successful benchmark for electroweak determinations of neutron radii on heavier nuclei. A tree-level approach was used to extract the 27Al weak radius $R_w$ = 3.00 ± 0.15 fm, and the weak skin thickness $R_{\text{wk}} – R_{\text{ch}}$ = –0.04 ± 0.15 fm. The weak form factor at this $Q^2$ is $F_{\text{wk}}$ = 0.39 ± 0.04.

and a rich and dense population of massive stars, supermassive young star clusters represent the most massive star-forming environment that is ...dominated by the feedback from massive stars and gravitational interactions among stars.
Aims
. In this paper we present the Extended Westerlund 1 and 2 Open Clusters Survey (EWOCS) project, which aims to investigate the influence of the starburst environment on the formation of stars and planets, and on the evolution of both low and high mass stars. The primary targets of this project are Westerlund 1 and 2, the closest supermassive star clusters to the Sun.
Methods
. The project is based primarily on recent observations conducted with the
Chandra
and JWST observatories. Specifically, the
Chandra
survey of Westerlund 1 consists of 36 new ACIS-I observations, nearly co-pointed, for a total exposure time of 1 Msec. Additionally, we included 8 archival
Chandra/
ACIS-S observations. This paper presents the resulting catalog of X-ray sources within and around Westerlund 1. Sources were detected by combining various existing methods, and photon extraction and source validation were carried out using the ACIS-Extract software.
Results
. The EWOCS X-ray catalog comprises 5963 validated sources out of the 9420 initially provided to ACIS-Extract, reaching a photon flux threshold of approximately 2 × 10
−8
photons cm
−2
s
−1
. The X-ray sources exhibit a highly concentrated spatial distribution, with 1075 sources located within the central 1 arcmin. We have successfully detected X-ray emissions from 126 out of the 166 known massive stars of the cluster, and we have collected over 71 000 photons from the magnetar CXO J164710.20-455217.
The precise location and relative elevation of Spirit during its traverses from the Columbia Memorial station to Bonneville crater were determined with bundle-adjusted retrievals from rover wheel ...turns, suspension and tilt angles, and overlapping images. Physical properties experiments show a decrease of 0.2% per Mars solar day in solar cell output resulting from deposition of airborne dust, cohesive soil-like deposits in plains and hollows, bright and dark rock coatings, and relatively weak volcanic rocks of basaltic composition. Volcanic, impact, aeolian, and water-related processes produced the encountered landforms and materials.
To describe the perspectives of patients with inflammatory arthritis (IA) on outcome domains of trials evaluating medication adherence interventions.
Adult patients (≥ 18 yrs) with IA taking ...disease-modifying antirheumatic drugs from centers across Australia, Canada, and the Netherlands participated in 6 focus groups to discuss outcome domains that they consider important when participating in medication adherence trials. We analyzed the transcripts using inductive thematic analysis.
Of the 38 participants, 23 (61%) had rheumatoid arthritis and 21 (55%) were female. The mean age was 57.3 ± (SD 15.0) years. Improved outcome domains that patients wanted from participating in an adherence trial were categorized into 5 types: medication adherence, adherence-related factors (supporting adherence; e.g., medication knowledge), pathophysiology (e.g., physical functioning), life impact (e.g., ability to work), and economic impact (e.g., productivity loss). Three overarching themes reflecting why these outcome domains matter to patients were identified: how taking medications could improve patients' emotional and physical fitness to maintain their social function; how improving knowledge and confidence in self-management increases patients' trust and motivation to take medications as agreed with minimal risk of harms; and how respect and reassurance, reflecting health care that values patients' opinions and is sensitive to patients' individual goals, could improve medication-taking behavior.
Patients value various outcome domains related to their overall well-being, confidence in medication use, and patient-healthcare provider relationships to be evaluated in future adherence trials.
We present first results on PLCKG266.6−27.3, a galaxy cluster candidate detected at a signal-to-noise ratio of 5 in the Planck All Sky survey. An XMM-Newton validation observation has allowed us to ...confirm that the candidate isa bona fide galaxy cluster. With these X-ray data we measure an accurate redshift, z = 0.94 ± 0.02, and estimate the cluster mass to be M500 = (7.8 ± 0.8) × 1014 M⊙. PLCKG266.6−27.3 is an exceptional system: its luminosity of LX 0.5−2.0 keV = (1.4 ± 0.05) × 1045 erg s-1 equals that of the two most luminous known clusters in the z > 0.5 universe, and it is one of the most massive clusters at z ~ 1. Moreover, unlike the majority of high-redshift clusters, PLCKG266.6−27.3 appears to be highly relaxed. This observation confirms Planck’s capability of detecting high-redshift, high-mass clusters, and opens the way to the systematic study of population evolution in the exponential tail of the mass function.
