Yunnan, located in southwestern China, is known for its high fungal diversity, and many of which are endemic to the region. As part of our ongoing studies on fungi in Yunnan, we introduce two new ...genera in
Phaeothecoidiellaceae
(
Mycosphaerellales
), to accommodate one
Repetophragma
-like and another
Stomiopeltis
-like taxa.
Pseudorepetophragma
gen. nov. is introduced herein as a monotypic genus to accommodate
P. zygopetali
comb. nov.(≡
Repetophragma zygopetali
), whereas
Pseudostomiopeltis
gen. nov. is introduced to accommodate
Ps. xishuangbannaensis
gen. et sp. nov. and
Ps. phyllanthi
comb. nov.(≡
Stomiopeltis phyllanthi
), based on a new collection from Yunnan. In addition,
Stomiopeltis sinensis
is transferred to
Exopassalora
as
E. sinensis
comb. nov. due to its phylogenetic affinity and grouped with
E. zambiae
, the generic type of
Exopassalora
. This study provides new insights into the biodiversity of fungal species in this region and adds to our understanding of their ecological roles, as well as the resolution to ambiguous taxa in
Phaeothecoidiellaceae
.
Freshwater fungi are highly diverse in China and frequently reported from submerged wood, freshwater insects, herbaceous substrates, sediments, leaves, foams, and living plants. In this study, we ...investigated two freshwater species that were collected from Yunnan and Guizhou provinces in China. Detailed morphological analysis complemented by multi-gene phylogenetic analyses based on LSU, SSU, ITS,
and
sequences data revealed them to be two new saprobic species, namely
and
in their asexual morphs. Additionally,
is reported for the first time as a freshwater ascomycete associated with the medicinal plant
(Alangiaceae). Detailed morphological descriptions, illustrations and updated phylogenetic relationships of the new taxa are provided herein.
Taxonomic studies of bambusicolous fungi in China and Thailand have resulted in the collection of three fascinating saprobic coelomycetes strains. Morphology coupled with combined gene analysis of ...ITS, LSU, TUB2, and TEF1-α DNA sequence data showed that they belong to the genus Apiospora, family Apiosporaceae. A new species from Thailand, Apiospora mukdahanensis, and new records of A. locuta-pollinis from China are herein described. In addition, based on both morphological data coupled with phylogenetics and nomenclatural analyses, A. mori is proposed as a new combination. Maximum likelihood, maximum parsimony and Bayesian analyses were performed to clarify the phylogenetic affinities of the species obtained in this study. Newly obtained strains are compared with morphologically- and phylogenetically-related taxa. The comprehensive descriptions, illustrations, and updated phylogeny are provided and discussed for intra-and intergeneric relationships within Apiospora species.
This article presents the results of an ongoing inventory of Ascomycota in Yunnan, China, carried out as part of the research project series "Exploring ascomycete diversity in Yunnan". From over 100 ...samples collected from diverse host substrates, microfungi have been isolated, identified and are currently being documented. The primary objective of this research is to promote the discovery of novel taxa and explore the ascomycete diversity in the region, utilising a morphology-phylogeny approach. This article represents the second series of species descriptions for the project and introduces three undocumented species found in the families Bambusicolaceae, Dictyosporiaceae and Periconiaceae, belonging to the suborder Massarineae (Pleosporales, Dothideomycetes). These novel taxa exhibit typical morphological characteristics of
,
and
, leading to their designation as
,
and
. Comprehensive multigene phylogenetic analyses were conducted to validate the novelty of these species. The results revealed well-defined clades that are clearly distinct from other related species, providing robust support for their placement within their respective families. Notably, this study unveils the phylogenetic affinity of
within Dictyosporiaceae for the first time. Additionally, the synanamorphism for the genus
is also reported for the first time. Detailed descriptions, illustrations and updated phylogenies of the novel species are provided, and thus presenting a valuable resource for researchers and mycologists interested in the diversity of ascomycetes in Yunnan. By enhancing our understanding of the Ascomycota diversity in this region, this research contributes to the broader field of fungal taxonomy and their phylogenetic understanding.
The genus Alternaria is comprised of well-known plant pathogens causing various important diseases in plants, as well as being common allergens in animals and humans. Species of Alternaria can be ...found as saprobes associated with various dead plant materials. This research aims to enhance the taxonomy of saprobic species in the genus Alternaria found on grasses and herbaceous plants from Italy, based on multi-locus phylogenetic analyses of a concatenated ITS, LSU, SSU, tef1-α, rpb2, gapdh and Alt-a1 DNA sequence dataset combined with morphological characteristics. Multi-locus phylogenetic analyses demonstrated six novel species belonging to the genus Alternaria sect. Alternaria as: A. muriformispora sp. nov., A. obpyriconidia sp. nov., A. ovoidea sp. nov., A. pseudoinfectoria sp. nov., A. rostroconidia sp. nov. and A. torilis sp. nov. Detailed morphological descriptions, illustrations and an updated phylogenetic relationship of taxa in the genus Alternaria sect. Alternaria are provided herein.
The hyphomycete Pseudogliophragma indicum produces loosely constructed and often frayed synnemata, with a brown stipe and a divergent capitulum with monoblastic conidiogenous cells and deeply ...constricted phragmoconidia. Ramaraomyces corticola was described nine years after Ps. indicum with very similar micro-morphological characters. Both genera are monotypic. The holotype of Ps. indicum is depauperate. We re-collected Ps. indicum near the type locality. In this paper, we lectotypify the genus and species with the original illustration, and epitypify the species with a new specimen. An ex-epitype culture was derived from the epitype specimen and used to sequence regions of the nuclear RNA operon to determine the phylogenetic relationships of the species. The fungus belongs to the recently described family Wiesneriomycetaceae in the Tubeufiales, forming a sister group with the sporodochial, slimy spored genus Wiesneriomyces. We clarify the generic concept of Pseudogliophragma, propose Ramaraomyces as a synonym, and provide a new description and illustration. Wiesneriomyces laurinus is reported for the first time from Canada.
•Pseudogliophragma indicum is cultured for the first time and epitypified.•Pseudogliophragma is shown to be the second genus in the recently described ascomycete family Wiesneriomycetaceae (Tubeufiales, Dothidiomycetes).•Ramaraomyces corticola is a synonym of Pseudogliophragma indicum.
Partial 28S rRNA gene sequence-data of the strains of the anamorphic genera
Bahusutrabeeja
,
Diplococcium
,
Natarajania
,
Paliphora
,
Polyschema
,
Rattania
and
Spadicoides
were analysed to predict ...their phylogenetic relationships and taxonomic placement within the
Ascomycota
. Results indicate that
Diplococcium
and morphologically similar genera, i.e.
Spadicoides
,
Paliphora
and
Polyschema
do not share a recent common ancestor. The type species of
Diplococcium
,
D. spicatum
is referred to
Helotiales
(
Leotiomycetes
). The placement of
Spadicoides bina
, the type of the genus, is unresolved but it is shown to be closely associated with
Porosphaerella
species, which are sister taxa to
Coniochaetales
(
Sordariomycetes
). Three
Polyschema
species analysed in this study represent a monophyletic lineage and are related to
Lentithecium fluviatile
and
Leptosphaeria calvescens
in
Pleosporales
(
Dothideomycetes
). DNA sequence analysis also suggests that
Paliphora intermedia
is a member of
Chaetosphaeriaceae
(
Sordariomycetes
). The type species of
Bahusutrabeeja
,
B. dwaya
, is phylogenetically related to
Neodeightonia
(=
Botryosphaeria
)
subglobosa
in
Botryosphaeriales
(
Dothideomycetes
). Monotypic genera
Natarajania
and
Rattania
are phylogenetically related to members of
Diaporthales
and
Chaetosphaeriales
, respectively. Future studies with extended gene datasets and type strains are required to resolve many novel but morphologically unexplainable phylogenetic scenarios revealed from this study. It is increasingly becoming evident that a fungal lineage may include a mosaic of anamorphs, teleomorphs and pleomorphs whose morphologies may not always be correlated. It is therefore suggested that where possible all new species descriptions, whether teleomorphic, anamorphic or pleomorphic, should include DNA sequence-data to facilitate amalgamation of anamorphic and pleomorphic genera in a single phylogenetic classification system.
