This volume is dedicated to the study of medieval ars dictaminis. Analyzing several manuscript witnesses, it sheds light on the historical contextualization of the phenomenon and examines the close ...relationship between ars dictaminis and the political and social system of that time.
This volume presents an interesting case study dealing with the relationship between bilingualism and society in 14th-century Florence. Francesco da Barberino’s Documenta Amoris are a sort of ...orthodox contrappunto of the Commedia, in which Dante’s linguistic experimentation is substituted by Francesco’s rigid bilingualism. The book provides one of the first interpretations of this fundamental figure of 14th-century Florentine culture.

This study aims to be a contribution to the historical reconstruction of the large size biblical witnesses made after the second half of the twelfth-century, i.e. those specimens that in comparison ...with the Bibbie atlantiche are characterized by a purely imitative connection, as by that time they were devoid of any ideological content. The analysis of the Sessoriano 2 has revealed the deep changes occurred in the oversize holy books dated to the late twelfth-century. Those changes involved methods, techniques of manufacture, as well as the contexts of production. Furthermore, the interdisciplinary approach adopted, in which prevailed the paleographic component, led to a better understanding of the characteristics of the Sessoriano code and to a more precise definition of the geographical and, especially, chronological allocations. So this study proposes a solution to the mixed views among scholars about the interpretation of the subscription written on the last sheet of the manuscript. The accurate paleographic analysis, and the identification of the participation of several hands in the transcription, allowed to establish a positive graphic comparison between the realization of the colophon and the writing of one of the code's scribes. This hypothesis has contributed to the assignment of the colophon to the same period of the manuscript, allowing the proposal of an ad annum dating and of a precise topographical location.
The purpose of this contribution is to study the ars dictaminis in relation to the diffusion of the phenomenon of translation in medieval Tuscany (XIII-XV centuries). In particular, the article calls into question the vulgate which identifies an “exceptionalism” of the region due to the extension of the phenomenon of vulgarization as well as the ability to escape the dictates of the latin tradition of dictamen producing an oratory focused on use of the vernacular. After a brief overview of the recent literature on the dictamen, the relationship between this latter and the affirmation of the vernacular is studied in two contexts, Bologna and Florence. Such a comparaison has provided the guidelines for studying the influence of the dictamen, particularly in an author (Brunetto Latini) who is usually considered to be particularly subversive in the use and conception of rhetoric; we then proceeded to verify the permanence of the rhetorical model imposed by Brunetto, thanks to the contribution of other sources (in particular Albertano from Brescia), in the fourteenth century, measuring its consistency in a line that led by Andrea Lancia to the episcopal notary Francesco da Barberino. The result is two different models - one from Bologna, one from Florence - which emerge as such also in the manuscript tradition, that is analyzed in the last paragraph.
This paper focuses on the so far unknown Tuscan vernacular translation of Angela of Foligno’s Liber transmitted by the ms. Magl. XXXVIII.122 of the Biblioteca Nazionale Centrale of Florence (= F), ...dated 1408. The essay is divided into three parts: the first reviews the particularly rich and multifaceted Latin and vernacular manuscript tradition of the Liber; the second deals with the translation transmitted by F, wich is almost complete and quite faithful to the Latin original, comparing it to the other Italian vernacular translations; the third proposes a codicological and paleographic description of F.
The contributions gathered in this volume discuss the complex topic of translating in medieval itay from an interdisciplinary perspective, combining the philological approach with a detailed social ...and cultural analysis. The authors discuss, among other topics, translations of ‘classical’ and particularly so-called ‘modern’ texts, the distribution of knowledge and languages, and the social history of translating.
