Narrative voices in Ismet Prcić’s memoir/novel “Shards” are many; this article primarily focuses on what we refer to as the voice of the “silenced narrator” that appears to speak from a deep ...(“subdiegetic”) narrative level shaped by the unconscious workings of traumatic experience. Starting from psychological insights into traumatic states (Elbert and Schauer, Hunt, Crossley, etc.) and tracing the encoded symptoms of this illness across the text, the discussion moves on to a theoretical level to investigate notions proposed by authors such as Genette (to discuss narrative levels), Ricœur (in examining the construction of self), Caruth (in evaluating narrative implications of the literary voicing of trauma), Antonio Damasio (in exploring the source and the nature of the trauma-related destruction of the narratively voiced “I”), and others. These are used to establish the concept of a narrative subject whose voice emerges from the deep zone of their “proto-self” (Damasio), to be weaved into a distinctive narrative form that we will refer to as “proto-narrative.”
The notion of literacy is traced across the historical evolution of the phenomenon, and special emphasis is placed on the planes and modalities of its application. The key perspectives hereby ...examined are the following: 1) cognitive perspective, 2) cultural/social perspective, and 3) rhetorical perspective. While primarily focusing on the notion of digital literacy, the paper also examines the relatable notions of visual literacy, media literacy, reading literacy, and orality. The key premises, leaning on the works of Kress, Cytowic, Meyrowitz, Manovich, Jakobson, Ong, etc. are examined, revised, and used to offer different yet complementary perspectives on the meaning(s) of literacy applicable in the contemporary digital context.
This paper discusses intentionality and, more specifically, the impact of the language of the new media on different aspects of meaning related to intentionality, resulting in effects described in terms of echo and flickering as phenomena that accompany and strongly affect the reception of electronically mediated messages. This is substantiated by the analysis of communication that takes place across the social media and of the effects that such communication has on reality. The conclusive part of the discussion stresses the effects of cross-contamination between electronically mediated texts and reality, also pointing to how the new media affect the notion of transtextuality.
This paper explores the premises of textual (literary) persuasiveness of identity of characters within the textual world of Krleža’s play In Agony across the articulation of their mutual relations, ...their appeal to the recipients and the concept of self-understanding. Keys to the described textual verification are found in perceptive aspects of identity construction (perception; denaturalised perception; historicised perception) and within the realm of empathy, seen as a process of thinking, which is analysed from the point of view of characters and from the broader standpoint which takes into account the phenomenon of literary reception.
The direct interest of this study is to evaluate relations between material and virtual phenomena
weighed against the linguistic dichotomy which suggests these terms to be mutually excluding
...opposites. From such a point of view, the processing of language at the levels of pre-mediation
(body), mediation (language) and remediation (the restructuring of the linguistic code under the influence of other media) is being discussed. Special focus is on forms and modes of textualization
of language, reflecting both the virtual and the material sides of the medium, which is shown through examples ranging from everyday use of language to the literary one. The adopted perspective is cognitive, aiming to unveil the correlation between the virtual and the material at all levels of the cognitive process.
The notion of conceptual metaphor is fundamental to this discussion which unveils the metaphorical nature of concepts usually thought of as non-metaphorical (’world’, ’nature’), as well as that of ...language in the widest range of its possible uses – including the so-called literal language. The insights which emerge serve as a base to the discussion of linguistic and the literary meaning. The literary language is weighed
against everyday language from the metaphorical and the cognitive perspective. The argument is drawn from a cognitive analysis of Eugène Ionesco’s The Chairs.
The paper discusses complex relations between language & thought, aiming to unveil the role of perception, that of the brain & that of the mind in the formation of mental worlds, as well as in the ...process of their transformation ("translation") into verbal forms. The verbal products of the process are being viewed as material effects of cognition, subject to stylistic interventions which enable them to playa role in the cultural surroundings we are immersed in. As such, they themselves become objects & potential mediators of perceptive responses; they play part in the creation of new mental spaces; they are presupposed in the process of constant of cognitive advancement which accompanies human linguistic behavior. This paper investigates issues related to female identity in the broader context of its relations to national identity, using two novels as examples, Ana Đokić's Gordana među vrbama (Gordana amid ...Willows), and Recepti za sreću (Recipes for Good Fortune). Theoretical instruments are proposed for the investigation of gender-nation relations pointing to the phenomena of gendered nationhood and nationed gender, as well as to the traumatic consequences of such relations when contaminated by patriarchal aspects. The issues of Yugoslav identity viewed from within the post-Yugoslav frame is also addressed which raises the point of the missing or zero signifier, the effects of which undermine the stability of identity as ‘signified’ and induces trauma, as both novels reveal. A cognitive perspective is also applied to the two texts to provide a deeper understanding of the traumatic dimension of characters and of the therapeutic effects of the text itself, which in its totality assumes the position of the zero signifier.
