Both diagnosis and treatment of neurological emergencies require neurological expertise and are time-sensitive. The lack of fast neurological expertise in regions with underserved infrastructure ...poses a major barrier for state-of-the-art care of patients with acute neurological diseases and leads to disparity in provision of health care. The main purpose of ANNOTeM (acute neurological care in North East Germany with telemedicine support) is to establish effective and sustainable support structures for evidence based treatments for stroke and other neurological emergencies and to improve outcome for acute neurological diseases in these rural regions.
A "hub-and-spoke" network structure was implemented connecting three academic neurological centres ("hubs") and rural hospitals ("spokes") caring for neurological emergencies. The network structure includes (1) the establishment of a 24/7 telemedicine consultation service, (2) the implementation of standardized operating procedures (SOPs) in the network hospitals, (3) a multiprofessional training scheme, and (4) a quality management program. Data from three major health insurance companies as well as data from the quality management program are being collected and evaluated. Primary outcome is the composite of first time of receiving paid outpatient nursing care, first time of receiving care in a nursing home, or death within 90 days after hospital admission.
Beyond stroke only few studies have assessed the effects of telemedically supported networks on diagnosis and outcome of neurological emergencies. ANNOTeM will provide information whether this approach leads to improved outcome. In addition, a health economic analysis will be performed.

Following the decision to maintain the International Space Station (ISS) on orbit until at least 2020 (possibly until 2028) the AMS collaboration decided to correspondingly extend the lifetime of the ...experiment. Since the limited amount of helium used to cool the superconducting magnet allowed for only a limited run time of the experiment, a change from the superconducting magnet to the permanent magnet used in AMS-01 became necessary. Due to the lower magnetic field, to maintain the resolution the silicon tracker also had to be reconfigured with the installation of a silicon plane on the top of the experiment and a new plane above the electromagnetic calorimeter.
This study describes the successful upgrade of a mechanically pumped CO2 two-phase cooling system in space by designing a new pump module for the Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer-02 on the International ...Space Station. Key factors for mission success are emphasized, including achieving high coolant filling accuracy within 10% of the target and maintaining system stability within ±1 °C. The impact of adding radiators to improve cooling efficiency is examined, and it is found that operating multi-radiators out-of-phase does not significantly affect system reliability. The centrifugal pump design is shown to allow for better lubricant circulation, while the in-house designed controller incorporates protective measures to prevent cavitation, overheating, and over-current. This research advances the understanding of circulation loop systems and their upgrades in space and demonstrates the potential for extending the lifetime of space-borne mechanically pumped two-phase cooling systems.

We review far-infrared experiments on quantum wires and dots. In particular, we show that with tailored deviations from a parabolic external lateral confinement potential one can break Kohn’s ...theorem. This allows a detailed investigation of the internal relative motion in quantum dots and wires and the study of electron–electron interaction effects, for example, the formation of compressible and incompressible states in quantum dots and antidots.
The Alpha Magnetic Spectrometer (AMS) is a particle detector designed to search for anti-matter, dark matter and the origin of cosmic rays in space. A superconducting magnet has been developed to ...generate 0.78 T field at the center. The magnet system consists of a pair of large "dipole" coils together with two series of six racetrack coils, arranged circumferentially in order to minimize the stray field. The coils, series connected, are wound with an aluminum-stabilized mono-strand NbTi conductor and are cooled by a superfluid helium circuit. The superconducting magnet was successfully tested up to the operating current of 410 A, however the decision was taken to equip the spectrometer with a NdFeB permanent magnet in order to maximize the experiment life. The paper describes the results of the superconducting magnet tests and in particular analyses an anomalous increasing of the coil temperature during magnet charging.
