During the two World Wars that marked the 20th century, hundreds of thousands of non-European combatants fought in the ranks of various European armies. The majority of these soldiers were Muslims ...from North Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa, Central Asia, or the Indian Subcontinent. How are these combatants considered in existing historiography? Over the past few decades, research on war has experienced a wide-reaching renewal, with increased emphasis on the social and cultural dimensions of war, and a desire to reconstruct the experience and viewpoint of the combatants themselves. This volume reintroduces the question of religious belonging and practice into the study of Muslim combatants in European armies in the 20th century, focusing on the combatants’ viewpoint alongside that of the administrations and military hierarchy.

In July 1995, the Bosnian Serb Army commanded by General Ratko Mladic attacked the enclave of Srebrenica, a UN "safe area" since 1993, and massacred about 8,000 Bosniac men. While the responsibility ...for the massacre itself lays clearly with the Serb political and military leadership, the question of the responsibility of various international organizations and national authorities for the fall of the enclave is still passionately discussed, and has given rise to various rumors and conspiracy theories. Follow-up investigations by the International Criminal Tribunal for the former Yugoslavia and by several commissions have dissipated most of these rumors and contributed to a better knowledge of the Srebrenica events and the part played by the main local and international actors. This volume represents the first systematic, comparative analysis of those investigations. It brings together analyses from both the external standpoint of academics and the inside perspective of various professionals who participated directly in the inquiries, including police officers, members of parliament, high-ranking civil servants, and other experts. Evaluating how institutions establish facts and ascribe responsibilities, this volume presents a historiographical and epistemological reflection on the very possibility of writing a history of the present time.
Diese Studie widmet sich der Meuterei in der 13. Waffen-Gebirgsdivision „Handschar“ am 17. September 1943 in Villefranche-de-Rouergue. Diese Division der Waffen-SS bestand zum Großteil aus Muslimen ...aus Bosnien-Herzegowina. Der Autor zeigt wie die Erinnerungskultur der Nachkriegszeit die Meuterer als jugoslawische Antifaschisten präsentierte. Nach dem Zusammenbruch Jugoslawiens in den 1990er Jahren wurden aus ihnen kroatische Patrioten, eine Geschichtsversion, die die französischen Autoritäten später akzeptierten. Zu dieser Veränderung der Geschichtsbewertung kamen Spekulationen über die Motive der an der Meuterei beteiligten Männer und ihre Beziehungen zur französischen Résistance. Der Fall des Božidar Vitković, eines serbischen Medizin der sich in Toulouse niedergelassen hatte und der von manchen Historikern beschuldigt wurde, die Meuterei zu verraten zu haben, wird in diesem Kontext untersucht. Seine Persönlichkeit und seine Rolle kennen wir heute besser durch neues Quellenmaterial aus den Unterlagen der Familie Vitković, aus dem Militärarchiv in Vincennes und der Lokalpresse der unmittelbaren Nachkriegszeit. Dennoch kann auch dieses neue Material nicht alle Fragen, die bis heute die Meuterei von Villefranche umgeben, beantworten.
This article looks back at the mutiny that broke out on September 17, 1943 in Villefranche-de-Rouergue in the pioneer battalion of the 13th SS “Handschar” division, composed mainly of Muslims from Bosnia-Herzegovina. It shows how a memorial consensus was developed in the post-war period, presenting the mutineers as Yugoslav anti-fascists, before the violent disappearance of Yugoslavia shattered this image. From the 1990s onwards, the Villefranche mutiny was presented as the action of Croatian patriots, a version accepted by French authorities in the mid-2000s. This recomposition of memory was coupled with speculation about the motivations of the mutineers and their links with the French Resistance. In this context, this article looks in particular at the case of Božidar Vitković, a Serbian doctor based in Toulouse and accused by some historians of having betrayed the mutineers. In order to understand better his personality and role, new sources are used, namely the Vitković family archives, the military archives of Vincennes and the local press of the immediate post-war period, without being able to resolve all the questions surrounding the Villefranche mutiny.
Cet article revient sur la mutinerie ayant éclaté le 17 septembre 1943 à Villefranchede-Rouergue dans le bataillon de pionniers de la 13e division SS «Handschar», composée majoritairement de musulmans de Bosnie-Herzégovine. Il montre comment s’est élaboré dans l’après-guerre un consensus mémoriel présentant les mutins comme des antifascistes yougoslaves, avant que la disparition violente de la Yougoslavie ne le fasse voler en éclats. À partir des années 1990, en effet, la mutinerie de Villefranche est présentée comme l’action de patriotes croates, une version acceptée par les autorités françaises au milieu des années 2000. Cette recomposition mémorielle s’est doublée de spéculations concernant les motivations des mutins et leurs liens avec la Résistance française. Dans ce contexte, cet article revient en particulier sur le cas de Božidar Vitković, un médecin serbe établi à Toulouse et accusé par certains historiens d’avoir trahi les mutins. Pour mieux cerner sa personnalité et son rôle, de nouvelles sources sont utilisées, à savoir les archives de la famille Vitković, les archives militaires de Vincennes et la presse locale de l’immédiat après guerre, sans que les questions qui entourent la mutinerie de Villefranche puissent être toutes résolues.
Este artículo versa sobre el motín que ocurrió el 17 de septiembre de 1943 en Villefranche-de-Rouergue en el batallón de zapadores de la 13a división SS “Handschar”, compuesto principalmente por musulmanes de Bosnia-Herzegovina. Muestra cómo se elaboró en la posguerra un consenso de memoria, que presentaba a los amotinados como antifascistas yugoslavas, antes de que la violenta desaparición de Yugoslavia lo echase abajo. A partir de los años 1990 efectivamente el motín de Villefranche está presentado como impulsado por patriotas croatas, versión aceptada por las autoridades francesas en medio de los años 2000. Esa revisión de la memoria corre parejas con las especulaciones acerca de las motivaciones de los amotinados y de sus relaciones con la Resistencia francesa. En ese contexto, este artículo se centra en particular el caso de Božidar Vitković, médico serbio radicado en Toulouse y acusado por algunos historiadores de haber traicionado a los amotinados. Para mejor circunscribir su personalidad y su papel, se utilizan nuevas fuentes, o sea los archivos de la familia Vitković, los archivos militares de Vincennes y la prensa local de la inmediata posguerra, sin que se puedan resolver todas las cuestiones relativas al motín de Villefranche.

Bosniaks were the main victims of the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s, but they also asserted themselves as a sovereign political nation. The Party of Democratic Action (SDA) led important political and ...identity transformations within the Bosnian nation. Attempts at authoritarian re-Islamization failed and led to the nationalization of Islam. In the rest of the Balkans, political parties have emerged, representing the Muslim populations of the region. Religious institutions underwent a certain revival and reinvested the public sphere, but there was no real 'return of religion'. Faced with the various influences coming from the Muslim world, local actors are putting forward their European identity but are struggling to define a 'Balkan model'.
Les Bosniaques ont été les principales victimes des guerres yougoslaves des années 1990, mais se sont aussi affirmés comme nation politique souveraine. Le Parti de l'action démocratique (SDA) a orchestré d'importantes transformations politiques et identitaires au sein de la nation bosniaque. Les tentatives de réislamisation autoritaire ont échoué et ont débouché sur une nationalisation de l'islam. Dans le reste des Balkans, des partis politiques sont apparus, représentant les populations musulmanes de la région. Les institutions religieuses ont connu un certain renouveau et ont réinvesti la sphère publique, mais il n'y a pas eu de véritable 'retour du religieux'. Face aux influences diverses venant du monde musulman, les acteurs locaux mettent en avant leur identité européenne mais peinent à définir un 'modèle balkanique'.
