We have collected broadband spectral energy distributions (SEDs) of three BL Lac objects 3FGL J0022.1−1855 (z = 0.689), 3FGL J0630.9−2406 (z ≳ 1.239), and 3FGL J0811.2−7529 (z = 0.774), detected by ...Fermi with relatively flat gigaelectronvolt spectra. By observing simultaneously in the near-infrared to hard X-ray band, we can well characterize the high end of the synchrotron component of the SED. Thus, fitting the SEDs to synchro-Compton models of the dominant emission from the relativistic jet, we can constrain the underlying particle properties and predict the shape of the gigaelectronvolt Compton component. Standard extragalactic background light (EBL) models explain the high-energy absorption well, with poorer fits for high-ultraviolet models. The fits show clear evidence for EBL absorption in the Fermi spectrum of our highest-redshift source 3FGL J0630.9−2406. While synchrotron self-Compton models adequately describe the SEDs, the situation may be complicated by possible external Compton components. For 3FGL J0811.2−7529, we also discover a nearby serendipitous source in the X-ray data, which is almost certainly another lower synchrotron peak frequency (ν{sub pk}{sup sy}) BL Lac, that may contribute flux in the Fermi band. Since our sources are unusual high-luminosity, moderate ν{sub pk}{sup sy} BL Lacs, we compare these quantities and the Compton dominance, the ratio of peak inverse Compton to peak synchrotron luminosities (L{sub pk}{sup IC}/L{sub pk}{sup sy}), with those of the full Fermi BL Lac population.
•We present a robust image dataset for parking space classification.•We evaluate textural-based descriptors for parking space detection.•Classifiers are evaluated on different parking ...lots.•Classifiers are evaluated on parking lots that were used for training.
Outdoor parking lot vacancy detection systems have attracted a great deal of attention in the last decade due the large number of practical applications. However, a common problem that researchers in this field very often face is the lack of a representative dataset to perform their experiments. To mitigate this difficulty, in this paper we introduce a new parking lot dataset composed of 695,899 images captured from two parking lots with three different camera views. The acquisition protocol allows obtaining static images showing illumination variance related to sunny, overcast and rainy days. We believe that researchers will find this dataset a very useful tool since it allows future benchmarking and evaluation. The dataset is currently available for research purposes upon request. To gain a better insight into this dataset we have evaluated two textural descriptors, Local Binary Patterns and Local Phase Quantization, with a Support Vector Machine classifier to detect parking lot vacancy. In the experiments where the same view was used for both training and testing, we have reached outstanding recognition rates, greater than 99%. The main challenge, though, lies in building a general classifier that is able to detect parking spaces from the parking lots that were not used for training. In this sense, the best result achieved by the texture-based classifier was about 89%. The observed drop in terms of performance shows that additional investigation is necessary to create classification schemes less dependent on the training set. Other researchers can use these results as a baseline performance when testing their own algorithms on this dataset.
Various animal models have been employed to understand the pathogenic mechanism of neuropathic pain. Nitric oxide (NO) is an important molecule in nociceptive transmission and is involved in ...neuropathic pain. However, its mechanistic actions remain unclear. The aim of this study was to better understand the involvement of neuronal and inducible isoforms of nitric oxide synthase (nNOS and iNOS) in neuropathic pain induced by chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the sciatic nerve in rats. We evaluated pain sensitivity (mechanical withdrawal thresholds using Randall and Selitto, and von Frey tests, and thermal withdrawal thresholds using Hargreaves test) prior to CCI surgery, 14 days post CCI and after intrathecal injections of selective nNOS or iNOS inhibitors. We also evaluated the distribution of NOS isozymes in the spinal cord and dorsal root ganglia (DRG) by immunohistochemistry, synthesis of iNOS and nNOS by Western blot, and NO production using fluorescent probe DAF-2 DA (DA). Our results showed higher number of nNOS and iNOS-positive neurons in the spinal cord and DRG of CCI compared to sham rats, and their reduction in CCI rats after treatment with selective inhibitors compared to non-treated groups. Western blot results also indicated reduced expression of nNOS and iNOS after treatment with selective inhibitors. Furthermore, both inhibitors reduced CCI-evoked mechanical and thermal withdrawal thresholds but only nNOS inhibitor was able to efficiently lower mechanical withdrawal thresholds using von Frey test. In addition, we observed higher NO production in the spinal cord and DRG of injured rats compared to control group. Our study innovatively shows that nNOS may strongly modulate nociceptive transmission in rats with neuropathic pain, while iNOS may partially participate in the development of nociceptive responses. Thus, drugs targeting nNOS for neuropathic pain may represent a potential therapeutic strategy.
•Efficacy of NOS inhibitor as treatment for chronic pain•nNOS and iNOS inhibitor significantly attenuated CCI-induced nociception.•NO involvement in nociception induced by CCI in rats
The third catalog of active galactic nuclei (AGNs) detected by the Fermi-LAT (3LAC) is presented. It is based on the third Fermi-LAT catalog (3FGL) of sources detected between 100 MeV and 300 GeV ...with a Test Statistic greater than 25, between 2008 August 4 and 2012 July 31. The 3LAC includes 1591 AGNs located at high Galactic latitudes (|b|>10{sup ∘}), a 71% increase over the second catalog based on 2 years of data. There are 28 duplicate associations, thus 1563 of the 2192 high-latitude gamma-ray sources of the 3FGL catalog are AGNs. Most of them (98%) are blazars. About half of the newly detected blazars are of unknown type, i.e., they lack spectroscopic information of sufficient quality to determine the strength of their emission lines. Based on their gamma-ray spectral properties, these sources are evenly split between flat-spectrum radio quasars (FSRQs) and BL Lacs. The most abundant detected BL Lacs are of the high-synchrotron-peaked (HSP) type. About 50% of the BL Lacs have no measured redshifts. A few new rare outliers (HSP-FSRQs and high-luminosity HSP BL Lacs) are reported. The general properties of the 3LAC sample confirm previous findings from earlier catalogs. The fraction of 3LAC blazars in the total population of blazars listed in BZCAT remains non-negligible even at the faint ends of the BZCAT-blazar radio, optical, and X-ray flux distributions, which hints that even the faintest known blazars could eventually shine in gamma-rays at LAT-detection levels. The energy-flux distributions of the different blazar populations are in good agreement with extrapolation from earlier catalogs.
This study assessed the effectiveness of different concentrations of sodium hypochlorite (NaOCl), 2% chlorhexidine (CHX) (Vista Dental Products, Racine, WI), and BioPure MTAD (Dentsply ...Endodontics-Tulsa Dental, Tulsa, OK). Intracanal contents were collected from 10 patients diagnosed with chronic apical periodontitis. The samples were cultured on hemisections of root apices to generate a polymicrobial biofilm. Each biofilm was separately immersed in 6% NaOCl, 3% NaOCl, 1% NaOCl, 2% CHX, 1% NaOCl followed by BioPure MTAD, and sterile phosphate buffered solution (PBS). SEM analysis showed 6% NaOCl and 3% NaOCl were capable of disrupting and removing the biofilm; 1% NaOCl and 1% NaOCl followed by MTAD were capable of disrupting the biofilm, but not eliminating bacteria; 2% CHX was not capable of disrupting the biofilm. Viable bacteria could not be cultured from specimens exposed to 6% NaOCl, 2 % CHX, or 1% NaOCl followed by BioPure MTAD. These results indicate that 6% NaOCl was the only irrigant capable of both rendering bacteria nonviable and physically removing the biofilm.
Introduction: Childlessness is a global concern and it has serious demographic, social, and health implications. The declining Muthuvan child population may reduce their population on the whole. ...Objective: The study explored the prevalence of childlessness and its underlying reasons in the Muthuvan tribes of Tamil Nadu. Subjects and Methods: The study applied the mixed-method design, and the snowball technique was adopted to identify eight Muthuvan hamlets. Descriptive and thematic analysis was done for the collected quantitative and qualitative information. Results: The study found the prevalence of childlessness among Muthuvan couples as 30.65%. The underlying reasons were their cultural practices of confinement during menstruation and restriction on engaging in productive work and family care, which gave them the idea of regular intake of oral contraceptive pills and lessen their desire to have children. Conclusion: The study concludes that the comfort of their daily life has taken over more important than the consequences of objects used for comfort, to their health and future generations.
•We devised a protocol of repetitive electrical stimulation of the insula (ESI).•The results show ESI as an approach for neuropathic pain treatment.•ESIs involve cellular activity changes and ...GABAergic signaling in pain network.•It provides crucial evidences that insula is critical for pain controlling.
The insula has emerged as a critical target for electrical stimulation since it influences pathological pain states. We investigated the effects of repetitive electrical stimulation of the insular cortex (ESI) on mechanical nociception, and general locomotor activity in rats subjected to chronic constriction injury (CCI) of the sciatic nerve. We also studied neuroplastic changes in central pain areas and the involvement of GABAergic signaling on ESI effects. CCI rats had electrodes implanted in the left agranular posterior insular cortex (pIC), and mechanical sensitivity was evaluated before and after one or five daily consecutive ESIs (15 min each, 60 Hz, 210 μs, 1 V). Five ESIs (repetitive ESI) induced sustained mechanical antinociception from the first to the last behavioral assessment without interfering with locomotor activity. A marked increase in Fos immunoreactivity in pIC and a decrease in the anterior and mid-cingulate cortex, periaqueductal gray and hippocampus were noticed after five ESIs. The intrathecal administration of the GABAA receptor antagonist bicuculline methiodide reversed the stimulation-induced antinociception after five ESIs. ESI increased GAD65 levels in pIC but did not interfere with GABA, glutamate or glycine levels. No changes in GFAP immunoreactivity were found in this work. Altogether, the results indicate the efficacy of repetitive ESI for the treatment of experimental neuropathic pain and suggest a potential influence of pIC in regulating pain pathways partially through modulating GABAergic signaling.
The creation of multiple applications with a higher level of complexity has been made possible by the usage of artificial neural networks (ANNs). In this research, an efficient flexible finite ...impulse response (FIR) filter structure called ADALINE (adaptive linear element) that makes use of a MAC (multiply accumulate) core is proposed. The least mean square (LMS) and recursive least square (RLS) algorithms are the most often used methods for maximizing filter coefficients. Despite outperforming the LMS, the RLS approach has not been favored for real-time applications due to its higher design arithmetic complexity. To achieve less computation, the fundamental filter has utilized an LMS-based tapping delay line filter, which is practically a workable option for an adaptive filtering algorithm. To discover the undiscovered system, the adjustable coefficient filters have been developed in the suggested work utilizing an optimal LMS approach. The 10-tap filter being considered here has been analyzed and synthesized utilizing field programmable gate array (FPGA) devices and programming in hardware description language. In terms of how well the resources were used, the placement and postrouting design performed well. If the implemented filter architecture is compared with the existing filter architecture, it reveals a 25% decrease in resources from the existing one and an increase in clock frequency of roughly 20%.
