ABSTRACT We present the third Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) source catalog (3FGL) of sources in the 100 MeV-300 GeV range. Based on the first 4 yr of science data from the Fermi Gamma-ray Space ...Telescope mission, it is the deepest yet in this energy range. Relative to the Second Fermi LAT catalog, the 3FGL catalog incorporates twice as much data, as well as a number of analysis improvements, including improved calibrations at the event reconstruction level, an updated model for Galactic diffuse γ-ray emission, a refined procedure for source detection, and improved methods for associating LAT sources with potential counterparts at other wavelengths. The 3FGL catalog includes 3033 sources above significance, with source location regions, spectral properties, and monthly light curves for each. Of these, 78 are flagged as potentially being due to imperfections in the model for Galactic diffuse emission. Twenty-five sources are modeled explicitly as spatially extended, and overall 238 sources are considered as identified based on angular extent or correlated variability (periodic or otherwise) observed at other wavelengths. For 1010 sources we have not found plausible counterparts at other wavelengths. More than 1100 of the identified or associated sources are active galaxies of the blazar class; several other classes of non-blazar active galaxies are also represented in the 3FGL. Pulsars represent the largest Galactic source class. From source counts of Galactic sources we estimate that the contribution of unresolved sources to the Galactic diffuse emission is ∼3% at 1 GeV.
ABSTRACT
We report on results of spectropolarimetry of the afterglow of the long gamma-ray burst GRB 191221B, obtained with SALT/RSS and VLT/FORS2, as well as photometry from two telescopes in the ...MASTER Global Robotic Network, at the MASTER-SAAO (South Africa) and MASTER-OAFA (Argentina) stations. Prompt optical emission was detected by MASTER-SAAO 38 s after the alert, which dimmed from a magnitude (white-light) of ∼10–16.2 mag over a period of ∼10 ks, followed by a plateau phase lasting ∼10 ks and then a decline to ∼18 mag after 80 ks. The light curve shows complex structure, with four or five distinct breaks in the power-law decline rate. SALT/RSS linear spectropolarimetry of the afterglow began ∼2.9 h after the burst, during the early part of the plateau phase of the light curve. Absorption lines seen at ∼6010 and 5490 Å are identified with the Mg ii 2799 Å line from the host galaxy at z = 1.15 and an intervening system located at z = 0.96. The mean linear polarization measured over 3400–8000 Å was ∼1.5 per cent and the mean equatorial position angle (θ) was ∼65°. VLT/FORS2 spectropolarimetry was obtained ∼10 h post-burst, during a period of slow decline (α = −0.44), and the polarization was measured to be p = 1.2 per cent and θ = 60°. Two observations with the MeerKAT radio telescope, taken 30 and 444 d after the GRB trigger, detected radio emission from the host galaxy only. We interpret the light curve and polarization of this long GRB in terms of a slow-cooling forward shock.
Abstract
Spectropolarimetric measurements of gamma-ray burst (GRB) optical afterglows contain polarization information for both continuum and absorption lines. Based on the Zeeman effect, an ...absorption line in a strong magnetic field is polarized and split into a triplet. In this paper, we solve the polarization radiative transfer equations of the absorption lines, and obtain the degree of linear polarization of the absorption lines as a function of the optical depth. In order to effectively measure the degree of linear polarization for the absorption lines, a magnetic field strength of at least 10
3
G is required. The metal elements that produce the polarized absorption lines should be sufficiently abundant and have large oscillation strengths or Einstein absorption coefficients. We encourage both polarization measurements and high-dispersion observations of the absorption lines in order to detect the triplet structure in early GRB optical afterglows.
Aims. The nearby (z = 0.031) TeV blazar Mrk 421 was reported to be in a high state of flux activity since November, 2009. We aim to investigate possible changes in the physical parameters of Mrk 421 ...during its high state of activity using multiwavelength data. Methods. We have observed this source in the bright state using the High Altitude GAmma Ray (HAGAR) telescope array at energies above 250 GeV during February 13–19, 2010. Optical, X-ray and γ-ray archival data were also used to obtain the spectral energy distribution and light curves. Results. Mrk 421 was found to undergo one of its brightest flaring episodes on February 17, 2010 by various observations in X-rays and γ-rays. HAGAR observations during February 13–19, 2010 at energies above 250 GeV show an enhancement in the flux level, with a maximum flux of ~7 Crab units being detected on February 17, 2010. We present the spectral energy distributions during this flaring episode and investigate the correlation of the variability in X-ray and γ-ray bands. Conclusions. Our multiwavelength study suggests that the flare detected during February 16 and 17, 2010 may have been caused by a passing shock in the jet.

We present multiwavelength observations and a model for flat-spectrum radio quasar (FSRQ) NVSS J141922−083830, originally classified as a blazar candidate of unknown type (BCU II object) in ...the Third Fermi-LAT AGN Catalog. Relatively bright flares (>3 magnitudes) were observed on 2015 February 21 (MJD 57074) and 2018 September 8 (MJD 58369) in the optical band with the MASTER Global Robotic Nettelescopes. Optical spectra obtained with the Southern African Large Telescopeon 2015 March 1 (MJD 57082), during outburst, and on 2017 May 30 (MJD 57903), during quiescence, showed emission lines at 5325 Å and at ≈3630 Å that we identified as the Mg ii 2798 Å and C iii 1909 Å lines, respectively, and hence derived a redshift $z$ = 0.903. Analysis of Fermi-Large Area Telescope (LAT) data was performed in the quiescent regime (5 yr of data) and during four prominent flaring states in 2014 February–April, 2014 October–November, 2015 February–March, and 2018 September. We present spectral and timing analysis with Fermi-LAT. We report a hardening of the gamma-ray spectrum during the last three flaring periods, with a power-law spectral index Γ = 2.0–2.1. The maximum gamma-ray flux level was observed on 2014 October 24 (MJD 56954) at (7.57 ± 1.83) × 10−7 ph cm−2 s−1. The multiwavelength spectral energy distribution (SED) during the 2015 February–March flare supports the earlier evidence of this blazar to belong to the FSRQ class. The SED can be well represented with a single-zone leptonic model with parameters typical of FSRQs, but also a hadronic origin of the high-energy emission cannot be ruled out.
Since the detection of very high energy (VHE) gamma -rays from Mrk 501, its broadband emission of radiation was mostly and quite effectively modeled using the one zone emission scenario. However, ...broadband spectral and flux variability studies enabled by the multi-wavelength campaigns carried out during the recent years have revealed the rather complex behavior of Mrk 501. The observed emission from Mrk 501 could be due to a complex superposition of multiple emission zones. Moreover, new evidence of detection of very hard intrinsic gamma -ray spectra obtained from Fermi-LAT observations has challenged the theories about the origin of VHE gamma -rays. Our studies based on Fermi-LAT data indicate the existence of two separate components in the spectrum, one for low-energy gamma -rays and the other for high-energy gamma -rays. Using multi-waveband data from several ground- and space-based instruments, in addition to HAGAR data, the spectral energy distribution of Mrk 501 is obtained for various flux states observed during 2011. In the present work, this observed broadband spectral energy distribution is reproduced with a leptonic, multi-zone synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) model.
Diseases such as leishmaniases are important causes of morbidity and mortality in Brazil, and their diagnoses need to be improved. The use of monoclonal antibodies has ensured high specificity to ...immunodiagnosis. The development of an immunosensor, coupling a monoclonal antibody to a bioelectronic device capable of quickly detecting Leishmania sp. antigens both qualitatively and quantitatively, is a promising alternative for the diagnosis of leishmaniasis due to its high specificity, low cost, and portability, compared with conventional methods. The present work was aimed at developing an immunosensor-based assay for detecting Leishmania infantum antigens in tissues of infected hosts. Four hybridomas producing monoclonal antibodies against L. infantum had their specificity confirmed by enzyme-linked immunosorbent assay. These antibodies were immobilized on a gold surface, covered with a thin film of 2-aminoethanethiol (cysteamine) and glutaraldehyde, blocked with glycine, and placed into contact with extracts of L. infantum–infected and noninfected control hamster spleens. The assay was able to detect 1.8 × 10⁴ amastigotes/g of infected tissue. These results demonstrated that this assay may be useful for quantifying L. infantum amastigotes in organs of experimental animals for studies on pathogenesis and immunity and that it is a promising tool for the development of a diagnostic method, based on antigen detection, of human and dog visceral leishmaniasis.
Abstract Synaptic modulation by activity-dependent changes constitutes a cellular mechanism for neuronal plasticity. However, it is not clear how the complete lack of neuronal signaling specifically ...affects elements involved in the communication between neurons. In the retina, it is now well established that both chemical and electrical synapses are essential to mediate the transmission of visual signaling triggered by the photoreceptors. In this study, we compared the expression of synaptic proteins in the retinas of wild-type (WT) vs. rd/rd mice, an animal model that displays inherited and specific ablation of photoreceptors caused by a mutation in the gene encoding the β-subunit of rod cGMP-phosphodiesterase ( Pde6b rd1 ). We specifically examined the expression of connexins (Cx), the proteins that form the gap junction channels of electrical synapses, in addition to synaptophysin and synapsin I, which are involved in the release of neurotransmitters at chemical synapses. Our results revealed that Cx36 gene expression levels are lower in the retinas of rd/rd when compared with WT. Confocal analysis indicated that Cx36 immunolabeling almost disappeared in the outer plexiform layer without significant changes in protein distribution within the inner plexiform layer of rd/rd retinas. Likewise, synaptophysin expression remarkably decreased in the outer plexiform layer of rd/rd retinas, and this down-regulation was also associated with diminished transcript levels. Furthermore, we observed down-regulation of Cx57 gene expression in rd/rd retinas when compared with WT and also changes in protein distribution. Interestingly, Cx45 and synapsin I expression in rd/rd retinas showed no noticeable changes when compared with WT. Taken together, our results revealed that the loss of photoreceptors leads to decreased expression of some synaptic proteins. More importantly, this study provides evidence that neuronal activity regulates, but is not essential to maintain, the expression of synaptic elements.
In SARS and influenza-type infections, the transmission of the viral particles from the infected individual to the susceptible individual involves the respiratory route. The current novel CoV2 ...transmission also involves a similar mechanism. The virus particles are present as droplets ranging from 5 to 10 μm in diameter and are expelled into ambient air when the infected individual coughs, sneezes, or even speaks. These tiny droplets move over a distance through the atmosphere, and the initial velocity determines the maximum distance the droplets reach. In this work, a computational fluid dynamic model was developed using Ansys Fluent software, incorporating the physical characteristics of the viral droplets and the ambient atmosphere. The movement of these particles was analyzed for three different initial velocities of 1, 5, and 10 m/s. Furthermore, the maximum distance traveled by the simulated particles for higher velocities was analyzed using a linear regression model. Results demonstrate that the simulated viral particles embedded in the droplets can travel a maximum distance of 1.24 m for an initial velocity of 10 m/s. Furthermore, an increase in the initial velocity to a value of 30 m/s results in the particle’s movement to a maximum distance of 2.595 m. The study results indicate that at least 2.5 meters distance has to be maintained for effective social distancing to prevent the further spread of the novel CoV2 transmission. Even after the lifting of the lockdown, institutional social distancing needs to be practiced to abate the transmission to a near-zero level and to prevent a rebound. In public places such as public transport and shopping malls, strict adherence to wearing masks must be made mandatory by social regulation.
We present a catalog of sources detected above 10 GeV by the Fermi Large Area Telescope (LAT) in the first 7 years of data using the Pass 8 event-level analysis. This is the Third Catalog of Hard ...Fermi-LAT Sources (3FHL), containing 1556 objects characterized in the 10 GeV-2 TeV energy range. The sensitivity and angular resolution are improved by factors of 3 and 2 relative to the previous LAT catalog at the same energies (1FHL). The vast majority of detected sources (79%) are associated with extragalactic counterparts at other wavelengths, including 16 sources located at very high redshift (z > 2). Of the sources, 8% have Galactic counterparts and 13% are unassociated (or associated with a source of unknown nature). The high-latitude sky and the Galactic plane are observed with a flux sensitivity of 4.4 to 9.5 × 10−11 ph cm−2 s−1, respectively (this is approximately 0.5% and 1% of the Crab Nebula flux above 10 GeV). The catalog includes 214 new γ-ray sources. The substantial increase in the number of photons (more than 4 times relative to 1FHL and 10 times to 2FHL) also allows us to measure significant spectral curvature for 32 sources and find flux variability for 163 of them. Furthermore, we estimate that for the same flux limit of 10−12 erg cm−2 s−1, the energy range above 10 GeV has twice as many sources as the range above 50 GeV, highlighting the importance, for future Cherenkov telescopes, of lowering the energy threshold as much as possible.
