In order to prioritize the exhumation of the most informative reference relatives to increase the statistical power of a reference group, a conditional simulation approach for missing person ...identification that combines both exclusion and inclusion power in reference families has been previously developed. The aim of this study is to empirically validate this approach by comparing its predicted theoretical prioritization model with the observed changes in statistical power in real cases of our laboratory, in which new relatives had already been added. We conclude that this approach is a reliable tool to choose the most appropriate reference relatives to complete a family group and improve the identification power of a Missing Person (MP).
With the aim to study Argentinian ethnic structure and its miscegenation, we analyzed the mitochondrial DNA (mtDNA) and Y-chromosome Short Tandem Repeats (Y-STR) of 1580 blood samples from male ...donors. Our results showed that the population has a greater presence of Native American lineages on the maternal side (68.73 %) regarding the paternal line (4.18 %), alongside a majority of Eurasian origins in the paternal line (92.47 %). From the independence analysis, a significant difference was observed when compared with that expected by random crossings. The results are in agreement with a model where the miscegenation of native women with European men prevails, which has been widely observed in Argentine’s migratory currents and population history.
In this study 1178 Y-STR haplotypes of unrelated male donors’ samples were analyzed in order to detect Y-STR structure variations and their implications in forensic samples analysis. DNA was ...amplified with Yfiler or Yfiler Plus (Applied Biosystems). 19 structure variations (1.6%) were detected: 12 duplications, 5 deletions, 1 deletion/duplication and 1 complex structure variation. The markers involved were mostly DYF387S1 and DYS19. In 5 samples the structure variations included several Y-STRs. In one particular case, alleles were detected in only 7 markers of the Yfiler Plus kit. These findings are not critical for kinship studies whereas are very important in forensic caseworks interpretation.
