The long‐term evolution of COVID‐19 is unknown, making it necessary to study the persistence of symptoms over time and their impact on quality of life in people who have had the disease. We analyzed ...these aspects 1 year after admission for COVID‐19 and explored the influence of treatment with systemic corticosteroids during the acute phase of the illness. This observational cohort study took place in a tertiary hospital in March and April 2021 and included people admitted due to infection with SARS‐CoV‐2 in March, April, or May 2020. We excluded patients who had died, were unreachable or had substantial cognitive impairment. A telephone survey was undertaken to assess the presence of symptoms related to COVID‐19 and to administer the SF‐36 quality of life questionnaire. Other variables collected were demographic and clinical data along with the treatment received and the evolution over time. We analyzed 76 patients, including 44 who did not receive corticosteroids and 32 who did. Most symptoms were less frequent in the group that received corticosteroids, with statistically significant differences for headache, dysphagia, chest pain, and depression. These patients also showed significantly better outcomes in the SF‐36 domains for “bodily pain” and “mental health.” Corticosteroids administered in the acute phase of COVID‐19 could attenuate the presence of long‐term symptoms and improve patients’ quality of life.
Granulomatous-lymphocytic interstitial lung disease (GLILD) is a distinct clinic-radio-pathological interstitial lung disease (ILD) that develops in 9% to 30% of patients with common variable ...immunodeficiency (CVID). Often related to extrapulmonary dysimmune disorders, it is associated with long-term lung damage and poorer clinical outcomes. The aim of this study was to explore the potential use of the integration between clinical parameters, laboratory variables, and developed CT scan scoring systems to improve the diagnostic accuracy of non-invasive tools.
A retrospective cross-sectional study of 50 CVID patients was conducted in a referral unit of primary immune deficiencies. Clinical variables including demographics and comorbidities; analytical parameters including immunoglobulin levels, lipid metabolism, and lymphocyte subpopulations; and radiological and lung function test parameters were collected. Baumann's GLILD score system was externally validated by two observers in high-resolution CT (HRCT) scans. We developed an exploratory predictive model by elastic net and Bayesian regression, assessed its discriminative capacity, and internally validated it using bootstrap resampling.
Lymphadenopathies (adjusted OR 9.42), splenomegaly (adjusted OR 6.25), Baumann's GLILD score (adjusted OR 1.56), and CD8+ cell count (adjusted OR 0.9) were included in the model. The larger range of values of the validated Baumann's GLILD HRCT scoring system gives it greater predictability. Cohen's κ statistic was 0.832 (95% CI 0.70-0.90), showing high concordance between both observers. The combined model showed a very good discrimination capacity with an internally validated area under the curve (AUC) of 0.969.
Models integrating clinics, laboratory, and CT scan scoring methods may improve the accuracy of non-invasive diagnosis of GLILD and might even preclude aggressive diagnostic tools such as lung biopsy in selected patients.

To assess the prognostic value of bronchiectasis in patients with moderate-to-severe COPD.
Multicenter prospective observational study in consecutive patients with moderate-to-severe COPD. Bronchiectasis was diagnosed by high-resolution computed tomography scan. A complete standardized protocol was used in all patients covering general, anthrophometric, functional, clinical, and microbiologic data. After follow-up, the vital status was recorded in all patients. Multivariate Cox analysis was used to determine the independent adjusted prognostic value of bronchiectasis.
Ninety-nine patients in Global Initiative for Chronic Obstructive Lung Disease (GOLD) II, 85 in GOLD III, and 17 in GOLD IV stages were included. Bronchiectasis was present in 115 (57.2%) patients. During the follow-up (median, 48 mo interquartile range, 35-53) there were 51 deaths (43 deaths in the bronchiectasic group). Bronchiectasis was associated with an increased risk of fully adjusted mortality (hazard ratio, 2.54; 95% confidence interval, 1.16-5.56; P = 0.02).
Bronchiectasis was associated with an independent increased risk of all-cause mortality in patients with moderate-to-severe COPD.

In this work, flux decline during crossflow ultrafiltration of macromolecules with ceramic membranes has been modeled using artificial neural networks. The artificial neural network tested was the multilayer perceptron. Operating parameters (transmembrane pressure, crossflow velocity and time) and dynamic fouling were used as inputs to predict the permeate flux. Several pretreatments of the experimental data and the optimal selection of the parameters of the neural networks were studied to improve the fitting accuracy.
The fitting accuracy obtained with artificial neural networks was compared with Hermia pore blocking models adapted to crossflow ultrafiltration. The artificial neural networks generate simulations whose performance was comparable to that of Hermia’s models adapted to crossflow ultrafiltration. Considering the computational speed, high accuracy and the ease of the artificial neural networks methodology, they are a competitive, powerful and fast alternative for dynamic crossflow ultrafiltration modeling.
The impact of a red-fleshed apple (RFA) rich in anthocyanins (ACNs), a white-fleshed apple (WFA) without ACNs, and an extract infusion from
fruit (AI) equivalent in dose of cyanidin-3-O-galactoside ...(main ACN) as RFA was determined by the proteome profile of aorta and heart as key cardiovascular tissues. Hypercholesterolaemic Wistar rats were separated into six groups (
= 6/group; three males and three females) and the proteomic profiles were analyzed using nanoliquid chromatography coupled to mass spectrometry. No adverse events were reported and all products were well tolerated. RFA downregulated C1QB and CFP in aorta and CRP in heart. WFA downregulated C1QB and CFP in aorta and C9 and C3 in aorta and heart, among other proteins. AI downregulated PRKACA, IQGAP1, and HSP90AB1 related to cellular signaling. Thus, both apples showed an anti-inflammatory effect through the complement system, while RFA reduced CRP. Regardless of the ACN content, an apple matrix effect was observed that involved different bioactive components, and inflammatory proteins were reduced.
At present, high-density lipoprotein (HDL) function is thought to be more relevant than HDL cholesterol quantity. Consumption of olive oil phenolic compounds (PCs) has beneficial effects on ...HDL-related markers. Enriched food with complementary antioxidants could be a suitable option to obtain additional protective effects. Our aim was to ascertain whether virgin olive oils (VOOs) enriched with (a) their own PC (FVOO) and (b) their own PC plus complementary ones from thyme (FVOOT) could improve HDL status and function.
Thirty-three hypercholesterolemic individuals ingested (25 ml/day, 3 weeks) (a) VOO (80 ppm), (b) FVOO (500 ppm) and (c) FVOOT (500 ppm) in a randomized, double-blind, controlled, crossover trial. A rise in HDL antioxidant compounds was observed after both functional olive oil interventions. Nevertheless, α-tocopherol, the main HDL antioxidant, was only augmented after FVOOT versus its baseline.
In conclusion, long-term consumption of phenol-enriched olive oils induced a better HDL antioxidant content, the complementary phenol-enriched olive oil being the one which increased the main HDL antioxidant, α-tocopherol. Complementary phenol-enriched olive oil could be a useful dietary tool for improving HDL richness in antioxidants.
Scope
The lipidomic analysis of high‐density lipoprotein (HDL) could be useful to identify new biomarkers of HDL function.
Methods and results
A randomized, controlled, double‐blind, crossover trial ...(33 hypercholesterolaemic subjects) is performed with a control virgin olive oil (VOO), VOO enriched with its own phenolic compounds (FVOO), or VOO enriched with additional phenolic compounds from thyme (FVOOT) for 3 weeks. HDL lipidomic analyses are performed using the Lipidyzer platform. VOO and FVOO intake increase monounsaturated‐fatty acids (FAs) and decrease saturated and polyunsaturated FAs in triacylglyceride (TAG) species, among others species. In contrast, FVOOT intake does not induce these FAs changes. The decrease in TAG52:3(FA16:0) after VOO intake and the decrease in TAG52:5(FA18:2) after FVOO intake are inversely associated with changes in HDL resistance to oxidation. After FVOO intake, the decrease in TAG54:6(FA18:2) in HDL is inversely associated with changes in HDL cholesterol efflux capacity.
Conclusion
VOO and FVOO consumption has an impact on the HDL lipidome, in particular TAG species. Although TAGs are minor components of HDL mass, the observed changes in TAG modulated HDL functionality towards a cardioprotective mode. The assessment of the HDL lipidome is a valuable approach to identify and characterize new biomarkers of HDL function.
The sustained intake of virgin olive oil (VOO) and a functional VOO enrich with its own phenolic compounds (FVOO) modify the fatty acid profile in the high‐density lipoprotein (HDL) triacylglycerides, among others, whereas a functional VOO enrich with phenolic compounds from thyme (FVOOT) does not induce these changes. These changes are associated with changes in HDL functionality.
Objectives. To assess the psychometric attributes of the Apathy Scale- (AS-) Spanish version in patients with advanced Parkinson’s disease (APD). Materials and Methods. Over 6 months, 61 patients ...participated in a clinical study of levodopa-carbidopa intestinal gel (LCIG) and were evaluated using the AS and other clinical tools. Various psychometric attributes of the AS were assessed. Results. Patients (60.7% men) were aged 68.02 ± 7.43 years, with 12.57 ± 5.97 years from PD diagnosis. Median HY of patients in “on state” was 2 (range, 1–4), and mean levodopa equivalent daily dose was 1455.98 ± 456.00 mg. Overall, the parameters of feasibility/acceptability were satisfactory, except for a moderate-to-high floor effect in AS items but not in its total score (both 3.3%). Cronbach’s alpha was 0.78, while item homogeneity coefficient was 0.21. Almost all items (11/14) reached acceptable item-total corrected correlations (rS = 0.16–0.50). AS total score was moderately correlated with Beck Depression Inventory (0.34) and with Non-Motor Symptoms Scale domains 2 (sleep/fatigue, 0.35), 3 (mood/apathy, 0.56), and 5 (attention/memory, 0.41). There were no significant differences between AS total scores by established groups of sex, time from diagnosis, HY, and Clinical Global Impression-Severity Scale. Following LCIG treatment, there was no significant change in the AS total score. The relative change was 5.56%, the standard error of the difference was 4.17, and Cohen’s d effect was 0.10. Conclusions. The AS showed satisfactory feasibility, acceptability, scaling assumptions, internal consistency, and convergent validity. Responsiveness parameters were poor, probably due to the characteristics of the clinical study from which these data came. This trial is registered with NCT02289729.
