One of the most important tasks of urban and hazard planning is to mitigate the damages and minimize the costs of the recovery process after catastrophic events. In this context, the capability of ...urban systems and communities to recover from disasters is referred to as resilience. Despite the problem of resilience quantification having received a lot of attention, a mathematical definition of the resilience of an urban community, which takes into account the social aspects of an urban environment, has not yet been identified. In this article, we provide and test a methodology for the assessment of urban resilience to catastrophic events which aims at bridging the gap between the engineering and the ecosystem approaches to resilience. We propose to model an urban system by means of different hybrid social–physical complex networks, obtained by enriching the urban street network with additional information about the social and physical constituents of a city, namely citizens, residential buildings, and services. Then, we introduce a class of efficiency measures on these hybrid networks, inspired by the definition of global efficiency given in complex network theory, and we show that these measures can be effectively used to quantify the resilience of an urban system, by comparing their respective values before and after a catastrophic event and during the reconstruction process. As a case study, we consider simulated earthquakes in the city of Acerra, Italy, and we use these efficiency measures to compare the ability of different reconstruction strategies in restoring the original performance of the urban system.
A technique to measure the momentum vector of the ions produced in a nuclear reaction and analyzed by a magnetic spectrometer is presented. It consists of a powerful procedure for the reconstruction ...of the ions trajectory based on the use of a focal plane detector, accurate three-dimensional models of the magnetic fields and efficient algorithms to solve the highly non-linear transport equations. The technique is quite general and reliable even with large acceptance optical devices. Experimental results obtained with the MAGNEX spectrometer show a remarkable resolution of about 0.2° in the horizontal direction, 0.7° in the vertical one and 1/1800 in the momentum modulus. A high degree of accuracy is also found in the reconstruction of both the direction and the modulus of the momentum vector, with the latter strongly depending on the order of reconstruction.
Oxidative stress has been suggested to play a main role in the pathogenesis of type 2 diabetes mellitus and its complications. As a consequence of this increased oxidative status a cellular adaptive ...response occurs requiring functional chaperones, antioxidant production and protein degradation. This study was designed to evaluate systemic oxidative stress and cellular stress response in patients suffering from type 2 diabetes and in age-matched healthy subjects. Systemic oxidative stress has been evaluated by measuring plasma reduced and oxidized glutathione, as well as pentosidine, protein carbonyls lipid oxidation products 4-hydroxy-2-nonenal and F2-isoprostanes in plasma, and lymphocytes, whereas the lymphocyte levels of the heat shock proteins (HSP) HO-1, Hsp72, Sirtuin-1, Sirtuin-2 and thioredoxin reductase-1 (TrxR-1) have been measured to evaluate the systemic cellular stress response. Plasma GSH/GSSG showed a significant decrease in type 2 diabetes as compared to control group, associated with increased pentosidine, F2-isoprostanes, carbonyls and HNE levels. In addition, lymphocyte levels of HO-1, Hsp70, Trx and TrxR-1 (P<0.05 and P<0.01) in diabetic patients were higher than in normal subjects, while sirtuin-1 and sirtuin-2 protein was significantly decreased (p<0.05). In conclusion, patients affected by type 2 diabetes are under condition of systemic oxidative stress and, although the relevance of downregulation in sirtuin signal has to be fully understood, however induction of HSPs and thioredoxin protein system represent a maintained response in counteracting systemic pro-oxidant status. The article describes the main achievements of the NUMEN project together with an updated and detailed overview of the related R&D activities and theoretical developments. NUMEN proposes an ...innovative technique to access the nuclear matrix elements entering the expression of the lifetime of the double beta decay by cross section measurements of heavy-ion induced Double Charge Exchange (DCE) reactions. Despite the fact that the two processes, namely neutrinoless double beta decay and DCE reactions, are triggered by the weak and strong interaction respectively, important analogies are suggested. The basic point is the coincidence of the initial and final state many-body wave functions in the two types of processes and the formal similarity of the transition operators. Ar reaction at 270MeV give an encouraging indication on the capability of the proposed technique to access relevant quantitative information. The main experimental tools for this project are the K800 Superconducting Cyclotron and MAGNEX spectrometer. The former is used for the acceleration of the required high resolution and low emittance heavy-ion beams and the latter is the large acceptance magnetic spectrometer for the detection of the ejectiles. The use of the high-order trajectory reconstruction technique, implemented in MAGNEX, allows to reach the experimental resolution and sensitivity required for the accurate measurement of the DCE cross sections at forward angles. However, the tiny values of such cross sections and the resolution requirements demand beam intensities much larger than those manageable with the present facility. The on-going upgrade of the INFN-LNS facilities in this perspective is part of the NUMEN project and will be discussed in the article.
An innovative technique to access the nuclear matrix elements entering the expression of the life time of the double beta decay by relevant cross sections of double charge exchange reactions is ...proposed. The basic point is the coincidence of the initial and final state wave-functions in the two classes of processes and the similarity of the transition operators, which in both cases present a superposition of Fermi, Gamow-Teller and rank-two tensor components with a relevant implicit momentum transfer. First pioneering experimental results obtained at the INFN-LNS laboratory for the 40Ca(18O,18Ne)40Ar reaction at 270 MeV, give encouraging indication on the capability of the proposed technique to access relevant quantitative information. A key aspect of the project is the use of the K800 Superconducting Cyclotron (CS) for the acceleration of the required high resolution and low emittance heavy- ion beams and of the MAGNEX large acceptance magnetic spectrometer for the detection of the ejectiles. The use of the high-order trajectory reconstruction technique, implemented in MAGNEX, allows to reach the high mass, angular and energy resolution required even at very low cross section. The LNS set-up is today an ideal one for this research even in a worldwide perspective. However a main limitation on the beam current delivered by the accelerator and the maximum rate accepted by the MAGNEX focal plane detector must be sensibly overcome in order to systematically provide accurate numbers to the neutrino physics community in all the studied cases. The upgrade of the LNS facilities in this view is part of this project.
Urothelial carcinoma (UC) is the fourth most frequent tumor in Western countries and upper tract urothelial carcinoma (UTUC), affecting pyelocaliceal cavities and ureter, accounts for 5-10% of all ...UCs. Computed tomography urography (CTU) is now considered the imaging modality of choice for diagnosis and staging of UTUC, guiding disease management. Although its specificity is very high, both benign and malignant diseases could mimic UTUCs and therefore have to be well-known to avoid misdiagnosis. We describe CTU findings of upper urinary tract carcinoma, features that influence disease management, and possible differential diagnosis.
Two-neutron and two-proton transfer reactions have been analyzed in the present work. These kind of transfer reactions is an excellent tool to get insights into the short-range correlations on ...nucleons in a nuclear state. The direct and sequential two-particle transfer mechanisms, for which the valence particles can be transferred, were compared one with other to probe the populated nuclear states. Large-scale shell model calculations were performed to obtained the spectroscopic amplitudes for one and two valence particles.
Four specimens of Dosima fascicularis were collected from the Strait of Messina (Central Mediterranean Basin), representing the first record of the species from this locality, the second from Italian ...waters, and the most eastern indication of the species in the Mediterranean Sea.
